Six Mile Water Guardians - Book Your Place Now

You may remember that Antrim Council recently published an article, regarding the setting up of a voluntary warden scheme, for the Six Mile Water river corridor. Since then, following the official launch of the scheme, a lot of interest has been generated amongst enthusiastic 鈥楪uardians鈥 within the Borough. The Six Mile Water river corridor is already an important haven for many species of plants and animals; therefore we are keen to have as many local people join our group, so that we can help ensure its future for other generations. The scheme is supported by Antrim Borough Council and the 大象传媒 Breathing Places Programme, through the Big Lottery Fund.

A free programme of training sessions and outdoor activities will be on offer for all 鈥淪ix Mile Water Guardians鈥 who join the group. Whether you want to learn how to identify and record our local birds, butterflies and/or mammals, or discover how to improve our woodlands and grasslands for wildlife, there will be something on offer for everyone.

Find out more about programme here>>

The first training session will be held on Saturday 12th January from 11am to 3pm, with a 鈥淲oodland Management鈥 training day, facilitated by Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland (CVNI). This is an opportunity to get to know more about native trees, discover how to improve our woodlands for wildlife and to have a go at building habitat piles to help encourage invertebrates and fungi to the area. The session is free of charge and lunch will be provided. However, please note that booking is essential, as places are limited!

Elaine Upton, Countryside Recreation Officer with Antrim Borough Council adds: 鈥淐ome along and burn off this extra pounds gained over the Christmas period in the outdoors along the Six Mile Water, and learn some practical conservation skills at the same time! Training is free of charge and suitable for all abilities 鈥 no previous experience or equipment is necessary. It may also be suitable for children over 8 years, who must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Please bring boots and a waterproof coat.鈥

To obtain a full programme of training sessions or to book your place, please contact Elaine Upton or Ruth Wilson at Antrim Civic Centre

Tel: 028 9446 3113.
