Title: A Broke Down Melody
Reviewer: Josh Einsle
The caption on the cover reads 鈥渢he future of surfing will
come from places you least expect.鈥 This film explores all
the possible meanings of those words. This quote could be interpreted
as looking at the emerging surf cultures in all the third world
countries that traveling surfers have been going to for the last
20 years. Alternately the movie looks at all the types of waves
that people have not yet surfed, be they crazy tow-in peaks or
those strange close-out waves that really are only surfable by
body surfers. That said, the bulk of this film continues the pleasing
visual and audio stimulation standard to all Moonshine Conspiracy
films. Additionally, the DVD is packed with 45 minutes of additional
surfing footage, including two videos by Jack Johnson鈥檚
musical friend Ben Harper, and one of the best nose rides ever
caught on film. Overall, another solid film that is perfect for
wrapping up to on a cold night, and day-dreaming about peeling
lines of water.

Highlights:
~ Dan Malloy coaching the Jamaican
surf team in Ecuador. The Jamaican surf looks fun and it shows
that you do not have to have a world class wave to enjoy being
in the water or be a good surfer.
听
~ Mark Cunningham body surfing鈥.Kelly
Slater talking about how Mark and how body surfing influenced
his surfing. To this end, Kelly shows his own aquaman like abilities
while swimming and performing a perfect dolphin style aerial in
the concluding minutes of the film. As Mark summaries, 鈥渋t
is just body surfing. It is just swimming. It is not rocket science鈥.It
is a beautiful diversion.鈥
听
~ Gerry Lopez and Jack Johnson talking
about Jack growing up on the North Shore and Johnson鈥檚 first
Pipeline master鈥檚 contest. While watching Gerry and Jack
trade waves in Chile.
听
~ Kelly Slater towing into a unsurfed
wave in Tahiti and the Malloy鈥檚 et al towing into a some
mysto peak somewhere south of the US border to a voice over by
the son of a local fisherman.
听
~ My favorite feel good sequence
is showing a 8 year old Indonesian boy surfing a broken surfboard
with a single little fin stuck into it. This, if anything was
needed, really makes you appreciate all the privileges that we
have.
听
~ My favorite surf footage would
be the section in Chile since I love seeing cold-water footage,
and to see the Malloy鈥檚, Lopez and Jack Johnson carve some
beautiful lines is almost worth the price of admission alone.
