Ian Parkinson

听听on next : Gerry Anderson

Name: Ian Parkinson

Age: Very nearly half a century

Born: London, lived there most of my life. Mother's family from Skibberreen.

How long surfing?
About five years

3 sentences that describe you and what you do:

Ski bum turned family man. Still working out how to fit enough surfing and other important stuff around four kids and a "responsible" job. That's two, and neither is strictly a sentence.

Where/why did you start surfing?
My big sister was a Beach Boys fan. Growing up in South London in the '60's, California beach culture was captivating, like an alternative universe. About five years ago, took a couple of months off work and the whole family came on my dream road trip, from Seattle to San Diego. Picked up a Bic longboard along the way, it was left behind after one of those "everyone rides a Bic" competitions, and took a lesson at Cowells Beach, Santa Cruz. Completely hooked ever since. Still absolutely rubbish at it, but "the best surfer in the water is the one having most fun".

Quiver (ie details of your board/s), plus your fav board:
When I'm good enough to use something better than a Bic, I'll get a nice retro fish-type thing.

"Surfing is getting more popular in Ireland for sure". Discuss:
Surfing's getting more popular everywhere, but I'm wondering whether the real mainstream rush has peaked. It doesn鈥檛 take long to work out that surfing's quite difficult to do well, waves are fickle and unreliable and most of the time you're cold and wet. If you're just attracted by the glamour and the fashion, that gets tired pretty quick.

Most surf friendly pubs / gigs / eateries:
If you're in North Devon, check out the Loose Fit surf shop which is also a caf茅. Nice people and very nice gear - although not cheap.

Favourite Surfer/s and why:
Was lucky enough to see Kelly Slater "live" at Hossegor and thought he was superhuman. But I really love watching smooth Longboard merchants like Joel Tudor and Beau Young. I have as much chance of surfing like them as flying, but I can dream.

Best thing about surfing:
Sitting on the board on a sunny day, waiting for the next set to come along, and not caring about anything else.

Your top music/reading/movies/tv/radio, surf or otherwise: Patterson has been subjected to my musical taste - which centres around hardcore reggae - on a couple of surf trips, and didn't approve.

Any ambition as a surfer?
Still be doing it when I'm 90.

Dream surf trip:
Would like to do the West Coast again, now I'm a bit better. And at least one warm water Indo-type trip before my knees pack up completely.
