Where/Why did you start surfing?
Paddled out on a borrowed 7ft Dan Bendiksen back in 1975 on a wild day in North Devon and got completely hammered. It belonged to a girlfiiend I had at the time and she used to keep egging me on to get out there because she knew I needed a proper focus. I was blown away and have been totally hooked on it ever since. So a big thanks to Miss Dairymaid 1976.

My favourite board ever was a 5ft 11in 6-channelled quad which I used to ride in the eighties. It just used to fly and worked in anything from 2 to 8ft. Funny how the older you get the bigger your boards get. I've started getting more into longboarding and have a Paterson 6-channelled 9 1 that goes well. But when it's big I still opt for a quad shortboard.

Managed to spend my honeymoon in Ireland surfing and have been on numerous surf trips over the years, from Cork in the South to Bundoran and beyond in the north west. I've always found it amazing - and the local hospitality and craic is as awesome as the waves. For sure it's getting busier - but where isn't - but I don't think Ireland will ever lose it's special feel..

Favourite Surfer/s and why:
Tom Curren is a fierce competitor with an amazing natural style. Out of the water he is unassuming and humble. I like those traits.
Californian Chris O'Rourke was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease in 1977, Over the next four years he fought back three times from the illness before he lost the battle. We were both born in the same year and his bravery and love of surfing proved an inspiration to me.

Best and worst thing about surfing:
Best is always surfing with friends either at home or abroad.
Worst was going to Sri Lanka's east coast without a board and being forced to watch near-perfect 6 to 8 foot point waves from the beach in 30+ Celcius weather for six days..

I started the surf reports on 大象传媒 Ceefax TV daily surf reports nearly 15 years ago because I used to hear so many people saying they were disappointed at driving all the way to the beach only to find there were no waves. Back in the early days if you saw a fellow surfer heading back from the beach they or you would put your thumb up or down depending on whether you'd seen the surf.
