JAMES AND CHARLES MOORE

Jim Moore's grandfather, James, a blacksmith, told the army he was 39 when he enlisted. In fact, he was ten years older. Not long afterwards, his brother, Charles, also volunteered. He also claimed to be younger than he was. They ended up in different regiments, and never met. James survived, but Charles died from influenza and pneumonia he contracted during the war. And as Jim told Mark Patterson, neither knew anything about what the other had done.
