From the early 1970s Barry Cowan was a high profile presenter with 大象传媒 Northern Ireland, working on a wide range of news and current affairs programmes.

In 1974, Barry became the anchor person of 大象传媒 Northern Ireland's flagship evening television news programme Scene Around Six. This involved bringing the news into people's homes during some of the worst years of the Troubles.

He was the first presenter of 大象传媒 Radio Ulster's popular Talkback programme and also presented the station's Good Morning Ulster, Evening Extra and Seven Days programmes. In the early 1980s he left the 大象传媒 for a while to present Today-Tonight on RTE.

However, it was probably Scene Around Six that made him a household name in Northern Ireland and older viewers will remember him handing over to Nationwide in London for the national news programme.

Scene Around Six

Your Place & Mine has a feature on Scene Around Six, which includes archive footage of an interview Barry did in 1976 with another veteran broadcaster, Duncan Hearle.

In June 2004 Barry Cown died at the age of 56 after a long illness. With his penetrating intellect, incisive interviewing skills and depth of knowledge, he was a rare talent and one of Northern Ireland's great broadcasters.
