Viking women were responsible for clothing their family, and that meant weaving on a loom similar to the one we've featured here. Any extra material they produced could be sold or traded to increase the family's income.

The loom pictured here belongs to the York Archaeological Trust and can be seen at Jorvik in York.

After the wool had been spun (in itself an incredibly lengthy process), it is then woven into cloth. Once the cloth is created, it might have been brushed so the weave became less obvious.

The vibrant hues shown reflect the diverse colours which the Vikings created using various natural dyes. The brighter and more pronounced a colour, the more expensive it was to produce. Therefore you might be able to discern someone's social status by the colour of their clothes.

In the video demonstration, you can see how tablet was used to make borders for the cloth. Belts and straps would also be produced by tablet weaving.
