On the Out

Prisoners describe time spent outside of jail as 'on the out.' Andrew Barton joined eleven young men inside Northallerton Prison, on a scheme with a unique approach to reducing re-offending: a course aimed at improving their lives, 'On the Out.'

The Government recently said it wants to improve education in prisons because of the link between offending and a lack of vocational skills.

It seems North Yorkshire's a bit ahead of the government, because in Northallerton Young Offenders Institution, an organisation called Connecting Youth Culture's won an award for its scheme to rehabilitate prisoners, through teaching them about the arts.

大象传媒 Radio York Community Journalist, Andrew Barton, spent three weeks sharing the experience of the course with eleven inmates.

Day two听in Her Majesty's Young Offender Institution in Northallerton, of a scheme with a unique approach to reducing re-offending. The eleven prisoners have got to know each other and have learnt about punctuation - now it's time to write their own story.

There are elements of the course more suited to the prisoners' natural interests. In Andrew's next report we hear how they got on learning how to be DJ's.

The next day's session starts badly. The prisoners are shown films made on previous courses, but are not impressed.

The final day of the three week course has arrived. The prisoners have to perform their work in front of an audience of local dignitaries. The presentation is the culmination of three weeks effort, three weeks of confidence building and education.听

Have Your Say

How do you think the inmates performed on the course? Is this kind of rehabilitation a good idea?

Rehabilitation has to be priority in reducing re offending... prison is a depressing place.. young people filling there time with art and other acitivities is vital in helping them get through there sentence... my own son spent time in Northallerton prison.. so glad to see something posative being done.
