Still from The Last Coiner

Telling the Coiners' story

The Coiners were counterfeiters of coins, and operated in Yorkshire in the 1700s. Hundreds of years later, an equally innovative (but legal!) group of people has created a unique method of telling the Coiners' story.

鈥楾he Last Coiner鈥 Art Novel is headed by local filmmaker Peter M. Kershaw and tells a dark and intriguing story based on the 18th Century Cragg Vale Coiners.

So what is an Art Novel? 鈥淭he creation process for the art novel is based upon photographic imaging which is then manipulated in the computer,鈥 says Peter. The outcome is a cross between a graphic novel and a comic book.

Photo shoot for The Last Coiner

Photo shoot at York's NCEM

The initial photography took place in York at the National Centre for Early Music and surrounding farms. This three day shoot consisted of shooting over 40 people in period costume set in the narrative scenarios against a blue screen by York photographer Denise Curran and illustrator Vince Danks.

Extensive period costume was designed and made by Charlotte Aspin and Emma Renhard with Scarborough鈥檚 Yorkshire Coast College. York College Media Make-Up students did the amazing make-up for the shoot, sometimes ageing people decades at a time.

The novel, set in the harsh and poor world of 18th Century Yorkshire, tells the story of two brothers who set about creating a new industry based upon counterfeiting gold coins. The Coiners soon find themselves pitted in a struggle to the death against the Crown as the penalty for coining is deportation or hanging at Tyburn in York. However, the Coiners face darker opposition from within their own ranks by an informant prepared to sell them all.

As much as it is a stand alone piece the art novel is also the first stage in a feature film development. The story has been chosen by Katapult, a prestigious media fund program based in Budapest, Hungary.

鈥淏eing selected as one of only 15 stories from across Europe to be developed as a feature film is a fantastic achievement for all involved,鈥 says Peter. 鈥淭o think we鈥檝e taken a pure Yorkshire based story and can already demonstrate its appeal to a wider European audience is just a wonderful endorsement.鈥
