The Beached stage in 2006

Beached 2007 preview

Bigger, better and hopefully with less rain than last year, Beached is back! This year the festival has secured some big name sponsorship and the lineup promises some seriously impressive acts. Rachael Graham was at the launch party.

Beached 2007

Beached is a free music festival that takes place on Scarborough's South Bay Beach.

This year's Beached runs from Thursday 9th until Sunday 12th of August.

You don't need a ticket, just turn up and enjoy some superb music.

OK, so I know it’s a bit of a cliché, but this year's Beached is going to be THE biggest and best ever, even if we do get a repeat performance of last years lovely rain… (oh yes, we had enough H:20 to go around).

Music lovers from across 'sunny' Scarborough, and a lot further a field, will be flocking to this years free festival to get their little socks rocked right off.

I popped along to the launch party on Friday to talk to the organisers themselves, and it would seem that the major cherry-on-top-of-the-cake this year is the fact that some big name sponsors are getting involved, those being K-Swiss and JD Sports.

Festival rain

This is a refreshing change after the past financial problems the event has encountered. "In 2005 we were literally ringing around people, begging for money" says Mike Lynskey, the event director.

The event is just getting bigger and bigger. With a reputation for grabbing bands just before they hit the big time, who can blame people for wanting to get involved? In the past, Beached has seen The Kaiser Chiefs, The Libertines and, last year, The Fratellis, just showing how this event can not only be a hell of a lot of fun but it really is nicely ahead of the game.

"It can be such a buzz seeing a band and knowing they are going to make it big, and you saw them first, for free"

It can be such a buzz seeing a band and knowing they are going to make it big, and you saw them first, for free!

So 'what differences will this year bring?' I hear you ask. Well, it's all in discussion at the moment, but this year is going to be even more exciting, and there is going to be a lot of hands-on fun going on. Mike explains, "We are thinking of getting a full fairground up for the event, and maybe a skate park".

Of course this comes along with the usual beached stuff; bouncy castles, entertainers and so on (prepare to get sand in your shoes)!

I love the fact that at Beached, there is always something for everyone. "This year sees a lot of young rock bands" says Mike and the line up so far includes an eclectic mix of some really amazing new talent: the mellow acoustic tunes of Amy Macdonald, the emotion fuelled rock sound of Inme, and the electro meets rock ‘n’ roll beats of Mancini (plus much, much more!).

You can just tell that these guys are going to be big stuff. You can find the current list of confirmed artists on the Beached website and check out their own sites for an idea of what's to come.

All that's left to say is 'fasten your seatbelts', and remember to join us all for the four-day long ride! .

It’s fun, free and brings lovely people together, whatever your tastes may be. See you there!

Best bands of the weekend were Middleman, Fuzzgun Sniper and Alabama 3-best headliners ever and what a bunch of cool, crazy guys and one cute lady. Sundays line up was more diverse, Saturday saw too many indie bands, some of which washed over me to be honest. Look forward to ´óÏó´«Ã½'s review. A well organised event and we were blessed by good weather which made all the difference. Thanks to all artists, organisers, stewards and litter pickers.

I'm sorry you have to endure all the noise Jack. We would be interested to find out where abouts in the town you live. We try very hard not to let the sound spill into the town. Please contact us through the Beached website. As for the comments about the council, we have to spend months negotiating with the council, police, ambulance, fire brigade, coast guard etc. etc. in order to obtain a licence to stage the event. We also have to pay lots of money to insure the event. I believe these were the 2 reasons that the xmas lights didnt happen. And no... the council does not get any cash from this event.. in fact they give us a grant to help us stage the event.

It's all right for Harry to comment on the Beached Weekend he dose not have to put up with the noise and the inconvenience this event causes to local Scarborough residents and it's strange how the Council allows this event to take place and yet will not allow the Christmas lights to switched on because of the crowd problems or is it just that they are getting money from this event and that's all they care about

anita sheehy
we are all going to miss ed (mark) but lets mark it a good 1 to remeber him.why not make a cd of the songs he did but never recored, and sell it , and give the money to sam and the kids.

makayla
