Trawler deck

Tall tales from deep seas

When Eddie Temple began going to sea, fishing in Icelandic waters was even more fraught with danger than it is today. There were no high-tech navigation aids so the skipper's knowledge and experience was vital.

"I have no regrets about going to sea at all. None at all"

Eddie Temple, former trawlerman

Family history:Eddie Temple first went to sea as a teenager - not that anyone referred to young men in that way then! He brought back not only fish but also some fascinating stories. Now, at the grand old age of 84, he shares some of his wonderful "trawlerman's tales".

From young deckhand to seasoned skipper of a deep sea trawler, his life on the ocean wave encompassed huge changes in both lifestyle and technology. But some things are constant for fishermen then and now, the dangerous conditions and the difficulty of the tasks undertaken.

Eddie spent about 40 years as a trawlerman and during that time he amassed a wealth of experience and a treasure chest of tales. Danger was, and still is, a constant companion of seafarers and Eddie's stories reflect the difficulties of life at sea.

But despite everything Eddie says "I have no regrets about going to sea at all. None at all"

Drama and comedy on the high seas

There was plenty of humour as well. He remembers cooks who made the Sunday roast last all week while others cooked fish in a dozen different ways - none of them particularly enjoyable!

Newspaper cutting

Drama on the high seas was a regular occurrence and Eddie turned his hand to many things - including surgery on one memorable occasion.

Eddie's surgical exploits with rubber tubing and a sharp knife hit the headlines!

Tide and time allow for romance

Along the way Eddie also met and married Margaret and the devoted couple celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary in 2003.

The pair married in November 1943 during Eddie's embarkation leave - and then he left for wartime service in Air Sea Rescue and they didn't get together again until 1946!

His memories are of a fishing industry that has changed almost beyond recognition. They tell of rescues and losses, surly skippers, fascinating characters - and you can share in these reminiscences both online here and on 大象传媒 Radio York.

If so, you can send them to us now.
