FeaturesYou are in: North Yorkshire > Features > Town Hall Rock and Roll Town Hall Rock and RollSelby – nestled in scenic countryside, the North Yorkshire town boasts a grand cathedral, picturesque canal and now, thanks to Selby Town Council, a fantastic live music venue too. Last year, Selby Town Hall and 4Youth set themselves an aim – to bring great music to young people in the Selby area, in a safe environment and at an affordable price. Since then, the venue has put on gigs throughout the year including the likes of The Wombats; who played Glastonbury festival this year, The Motorettes; who are label-mates with Editors, and The Pigeon Detectives; whose new album charted at number three in the UK’s music charts. The under-20’s events are alcohol-free and staffed by both security guards and youth workers, providing reassurance for parents and ensuring that everyone is there for the same reason – to enjoy a fun-filled night of great music. The first gig of September on Friday 14th saw Liverpool two-piece To My Boy play to over 150 young people; the most tickets the venue has ever sold for this type of event. Described by The Guardian as being 'as exhilarating as an adrenaline shot to the temporal lobe', To My Boy transformed the place into a neon rave with their contagious electro powerpop anthems. It’s not only the music fans who get to benefit from the Selby Town Hall gigs, but also the local bands too such as tonight’s support acts – Kisima and The Element. Kisima rocked the stage with a set of both originals and crowd-pleasing favourites, each of the three members boasting impressive instrumental talents and a great flair for writing their own material. Second act The Element commanded the stage like they were born to be rock stars, displaying a solid sound and electric energy reminiscent of the current Manchester music scene. These are definitely ones to watch. Selby Town Hall was a fury of excitement and activity from the start of the night to finish, the fun-filled atmosphere rubbing off on the headliners To My Boy as they threw themselves into an engaging, pulsating fiend of a set. For music-fanatic Selebians, this venue is a well-loved and very much appreciated asset to the community, bringing together local young people with one of their greatest passions: music. last updated: 19/09/07 Have Your SayHave you been to one of the gigs at Selby Town Hall?
