Tony's Matchbox model steam-roller.

Saving the Sixties

Tony and Jenny Neal met at Clifton Ballroom in York in the 60s and have been together ever since. To remind them of the decade that has such a special place in their hearts, Tony's amassed a huge collection of memorabilia from the time.

Sixties memorabila

Some of Tony's Sixties memorabila

鈥淭ony鈥檚 a hoarder,鈥 says Jenny, 鈥渢he house is chock-a-block!鈥 But hanging on to 60s model cars, transistor radios, tank tops, ties, camera equipment, magazines, records and a听huge number of pristine first edition stamps, has ensured that memories of dancing to rock 鈥榥鈥 roll music, in York鈥檚 Clifton Ballroom, Guppies and Betty's Belmont Rooms, come flooding back as soon as the jam-packed boxes come out.

Tony says, 鈥淢y Grandma gave me a set of commemorative medals from the 1800s, which commemorate things like coronations and the International Exhibition of 1862, I think that鈥檚 what started me off.鈥

Whilst Tony鈥檚 collection is undoubtedly valuable, he鈥檚 never considered parting with any of it for cash. He has, however, given some items to the Castle Museum in York for their Sixties Experience.

鈥淭hey took some of the 60s model cars and a Brownie 127 camera and they were interested in the records; the Beatles and Hendrix.

"they also took a book for the ladies called 鈥楬ow To Keep Your Husband Happy!鈥 It was an interesting book,鈥 says Tony, 鈥渂ut it was mostly about cookery"

"They loved the authentic 60s sunglasses and they also took a book especially for the ladies called 鈥楬ow To Keep Your Husband Happy!鈥 It was an interesting book,鈥 says Tony, and then with pretend regret says, 鈥渂ut it was mostly about cookery.鈥
