SWAT comes to Malton

The Castle Gardens site in Malton is undergoing major change, and 大象传媒 Radio York's SWAT (Springwatch Action Team) is giving a helping hand. Find out how you can get involved on June 7th.

For a thriving market town in the heart of Ryedale, Malton has surprisingly little green space, so the decision to transform the Castle Gardens is attracting plenty of attention.

SWAT

Your chance to get close to nature.

Funding has been secured to improve the site, and make it a lively community space for Malton. For one day in June, 大象传媒 Radio York's SWAT will descend and help kick start this transformation by creating disabled access* and two open air classrooms.

We're looking for green-fingered volunteers to help us on Saturday 7th June.听The work is being supervised by the BTCV, with materials and tools on site. Between 10am and 4pm, there will be a variety of activities for you to get involved with, including:

  • Clearing nettles and weeds
  • Laying a membrane for the floor of the open air classrooms
  • Barrowing and laying wood chippings
  • Arranging timber for pathways and the classrooms' edges

In addition to getting your hands dirty, there will be special wildlife activities for children run by Malton Wildlife Watch Group. Youngsters with an artistic streak will also have the chance to contribute to special interpretation boards for Castle Gardens, with the help of Rural Arts North Yorkshire. (All young people aged under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.)

John Clayton will also be on hand, giving tours of the site's very special veteran trees. To get involved in any of the activities, please fill in the form at the bottom of this page.

Parking

There is no parking at the Castle Gardens site. If travelling by bus or train, the Castle Gardens site is located within walking distance of the town centre, and lies behind the Old Lodge Hotel on Old Maltongate.

If you do plan on driving to take part in the SWAT day, please park in one of Malton's public car parks, we suggest you use the car park on Water Lane (although please be aware that this car park has flooded in the past).

The Castle Gardens

The Castle Gardens site is tucked away behind the Old Lodge Hotel on Old Maltongate. It's a site of approximately five hectares, and is in need of work to improve access to the site and work to enhance the wildlife habitat itself.

The site is of great historical interest, with Scheduled Ancient Monument status thanks to its Roman wall, in addition to plenty of colourful Jacobean history.

* 大象传媒 Radio York's SWAT project will improve the disabled access of the Castle Gardens site. However, as the site currently exists, we regret that it is not accessible for wheelchair users.

Fill in your details and we'll contact you about being a volunteer
