Although she would love to win gold, she expects the competition to be tough this time round. 鈥淚t鈥檚 getting harder each time; the opposition are getting stronger. You have to play well every single day that you play. But I鈥檝e been training hard and I鈥檓 hoping just to keep it up.鈥 Mitton only got into the sport 20 years ago through the encouragement of her friends and husband. 鈥淲hen I was younger I was too busy doing other things, having a job and doing all the things other people do.鈥 But she added; 鈥淚 started to try different things out, wasn鈥檛 very good at a lot of them, but table tennis was the thing that I could actually compete in. So I took it up and have gone on from there.鈥澨 And having been confined to a wheelchair from the age of two, she admits that gaining access to sport has been difficult.听 A particular barrier has been the attitude of coaches. 听She said; 鈥淚鈥檝e approached people and asked, 'Will you coach me?' and they鈥檝e said, 'No, we can鈥檛 coach somebody in a wheelchair because we don鈥檛 know what to do.'鈥 鈥淵ou didn鈥檛 feel that people wanted you to play and so you didn鈥檛 feel encouraged (to play sport).鈥 Even now, Mitton is forced to travel from her Rufforth home to Leeds to receive specialist training. 鈥淚鈥檝e got one coach who lives in Manchester and one who lives in Sheffield, so we looked at somewhere that was halfway between so that we were doing the same amount of travelling.鈥 She explains; 鈥淚鈥檝e made enquiries in York, but I haven鈥檛 found anyone who could actually coach me in York.听That鈥檚 been one of the reasons why I鈥檝e had to travel further afield to find people who were capable of coaching me and would be able to improve my game.鈥澨 On being asked what changes she would like to see in the sport, Cathy said, 鈥淛ust an improvement in people seeing table tennis and wanting to participate in it.听 鈥淚鈥檇 just encourage anyone who sees a bat and a ball to go and have a go!鈥 The wheelchair table tennis event takes place from 7th to 16th September.听听听 听听 last updated: 08/09/2008 at 11:09 You are in: North Yorkshire > People > Olympics > Profile: Cathy Mitton |
