Students getting excited at Harrogate Grammar School

School Invasion!

Harrogate Grammar School hosted a huge school disco in November 2008. The school had beaten thousands of others to win 'School Invasions' - an exclusive school disco featuring top acts. Four Year 10 pupils gave us their take on it all.

How it all came about! By Joe and Ashley.

Friday 14th November at Harrogate Grammar School was the night of MySpace School Invasions, a competition run by MySpace. The competition had been open to all British schools, kids aged 14 to 18 had to vote for their school to win a party and 拢10,000 worth of music equipment for the school.

DJ Ironik got the evening underway.

The idea was simple, the school with the most votes, would win four artists to perform at the party. These artists were; The Wombats, Kate Nash, Fightstar and DJ Ironik.

We were first contacted by Mr Goldsmith, a music teacher, about School Invasions. He'd been called to say we'd made it into the final 20. He'd got in touch to tell us to spread the word as much as possible and to get everyone voting for Harrogate Grammar School.

With permission from teachers we were able to get the word out and over the space of three days we went from tenth, to fourth, to first place!

The Big Night! By Maxine and Alyssa.

The doors opened at half-past six with scores of screaming teenagers pouring into the completely converted hall. Then at 7pm, the first act came on the stage and the volume in the hall got louder.

DJ Ironik got the crowd screaming jumping and having a great time. His last song was 'Stay With Me', which got the whole crowd singing along. Next came Fightstar who even got the teachers dancing. Fightstar were playing live and this created a different atmosphere to the other acts.

A great night was had by all!

The Wombats, who were missing one of the band, did a DJ set. This was great as it gave the audience a wide range of music to listen to. Finally came Kate Nash who also did a DJ set. She played 'Foundations' as her last song which is probably her most famous and the crowd went wild! This brought a brilliant evening to a close.

The concert catered for everybody as it involved a wide-range of genres and styles. The whole night was a complete success and has, without a doubt, persuaded people to become more involved with music at Harrogate Grammar School.
