Launch of the York 10k run

Run for all.

A 10km race will take place in York for the first time this summer in memory of the fundraiser Jane Tomlinson. The race in York will mirror the run held in Leeds.

Jane Tomlinson, from Leeds, died in 2007 after a seven-year battle with cancer during which she raised millions of pounds for charity. It is the charity which she set up, Jane's Appeal, which organises the Jane Tomlinson's 'Run for all'.

The Leeds Run has proved so successful, raising 拢750,000 in 2008, that the charity has decided to add a second run. Jane's husband, Mike Tomlinson, says York was an obvious location; "Jane was very fond of York, our daughter Rebecca is a student there and it's a place we visited frequently. Logistically it was easier for us to set up an event somewhere in Yorkshire.

"I don't think there's a more picturesque city in the county and it's the perfect place to have a run."

The York run will take place on Sunday August 2nd and will begin and end at York's Knavesmire with the participants travelling through the City centre. Organisers say the York 10k will be a little bit smaller than the Leeds event, which takes place in June, with up to 5,000 people being able to participate.

Mike Tomlinson says that it's designed as an event for anyone to be involved with, not just professional runners; "You can definitely just walk it, to be perfectly honest I think those people who walk it will get an immense amount of pleasure from doing it.

"This is about people enjoying themselves and raising an enormous amount of money. I think those people for whom the distance is a challenge are amongst the people who get the most out of it."

The charities involved in the York run are Jane's Appeal, the charity set up by Jane Tomlinson; Martin House Children's Hospice; Macmillan Cancer Support; Sparks, the children's medical research charity; and COCO, the international healthcare and education charity set up by Steve Cram. Runners can also raise money for a charity of their choice if they wish.

Steve Cram MBE is a patron of the event and he'll also be running himself. He had this advice for anyone considering taking part; "You've got plenty of time to get yourself in shape for August, anybody can do 10k. It's a lovely distance for all abilities, from complete novices to people using it as training event for other longer runs."

It's anticipated that places for the race will be filled very quickly and organisers are urging people who want to participate to register their interest as soon as they can.
