Nottingham Castle was first built in 1068 by William the Conqueror on a narrow sandstone ridge. It was close to, but separate from, the Old English Borough of Nottingham.

The building that you can see today is the first of its kind in England inspired by Italian architecture. It was built by the Duke of Newcastle, William Cavendish and his son, Henry, during the period 1674-1679.

The castle is closely associated with the legend of Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Walk past the Robin Hood statue, and enter through the castle's medieval gatehouse. Meander through the colourful grounds of Nottingham Castle, taking in the award-winning flower displays on your way to the Victorian bandstand. Further up, pass the steps leading to the Eastern Terrace and on to the back of the castle museum. Here you can find one of the cave entrances that take you underground, past the guard room and on to the dungeon. Don't get locked in! Back on the surface, chill out with a trip around the museum's Long Gallery and then up to the museum roof for stunning views of Nottinghamshire. Exit the museum and take your leave - disappear down one of the soldier's tunnels, from which you can peer up Mortimer's Hole. Continue past the cannon positions and exit at the bottom of castle rock, sparing a moment to have a look back at where you've been, as well as the Miller's cottage.
