Divine Art : Rev. Jean Lamb

The Reverend Jean Lamb has spent 30 years creating works of art based on her Christian faith.

Jean began working with paint to explore her faith, she's since moved into wood carving and takes commissions from Churches.

Jean believes wood carvers down the years have had a special impact on religious art,

"We need images of repose, images that feed our hearts and mind and not just our flesh...

"It's really wonderful to go into Churches and realise that so many wood carvers down the centuries have given us images that reflect God's love..."

One of Jean's favourite pieces 'Our Lady of Sorrows' depicts the Virgin Mary. Jean says about the piece,

"I'd just given birth to my last child and I felt quite empty. I was trying to meditate on Mary's emptiness - the son she's given birth to is dead..."

Jean admits that her faith gives her the inspiration she needs to create art,

"I need it to inspire me in a sense because it reflects my faith... Jesus has inspired me and it's that relationship [that] has kept me going as an artist.

"I'm pleased to be able to serve the Church through my art."
