Our county is home of a world famous hero, the prettiest girls in the country ( so they say) and legendary stone lions!

聭A Sense of Place聮 will examine these stories and the spirit behind them. From the biggest council estate in the country, to the story of the Ollerton Colliery Banner, it聮s Nottinghamshire聮s people who make it special - hear their stories from 28th April.

Sarah Julian, sense of place producer, found capturing the spirit of Nottinghamshire was a real challenge:

"Nottinghamshire is a county with so many different qualities from the bustling vibrant centre of shopping and nightlife, to the gentle hills around Southwell and Newark, up to the close communities and mining heritage in the Mansfield area."

Sarah explains how she chose the topics for the six programmes:

"In trying to record a 聭sense of place聮 for our county I looked firstly to the legends and stories about our area.

Not only Robin Hood but also the legends about our beautiful women, and the stone lions in the square. Legends which have shaped outsiders聮 views on Nottinghamshire and have seeped into our own folklore within in the county.

Next, I looked to communities, the towns and villages in Nottinghamshire which have a strong 聭sense of place聮 - that took me to Ollerton in the north of out county, and the Clifton Estate within the city of Nottingham.

Another famous feature of Nottinghamshire which makes it unique is the Goose Fair. I started to think about the showmen who arrive here every autumn, what 聭sense of place聮 is when you聮re on the road, and what kind of place is created when the dodgems roll into town.

When I visited the travellers site at Newark, one of the biggest in the country and heard the tales of the people who live there - my set of six programmes was complete!"
