Voices: Turning words into action

My Meadows: Natasha Johnson-Richards

I always dreamed of working in the Meadows.

That dream's come true. Here's why the Meadows means so much to me.

Making the Meadows hi-tech - Natasha Johnson-Richards

My name is Natasha Johnson-Richards.

20 years ago whilst walking to Bosworth school I thought about the job I would love to do in the future - I wanted to become a teacher and work in the Meadows.

I made my headmaster at Bosworth School, Mr Morgan, aware of this and he allowed me to read to small groups of children to get confidence.

The children loved the way I told stories, as I would always add excitement to the tales and add characters.

Our headmaster was great. He would also allow me and my friends to perform at our assembly where we would make up dance routines to songs like Madonna's 鈥淧opa don鈥檛 preach鈥 or Dexy鈥檚 Midnight Runners.

We still joke about it and say we are the original Spice Girls.

Life in the Meadows was 鈥渟imply the best and better than all the rest.鈥

When I stayed with family during the school holidays I always wanted to return home. I missed the river, the green embankments, paddling pool and the park, which was on our school grounds.

My school at Wilford Meadows was just as memorable. The walk to school was amazing and so therapeutic. We would go over the river using the toll bridge or previous iron bridge then past the Georges pond.

We would see horses, beavers, and wildlife and the splendid nature that surrounds us.

That ambition which I had so many years ago has been achieved and I am a computer teacher and teach people in the Meadows.

It is really good the organisation. I work for (www.cuict.org.uk ) has secured funding to work in the Meadows from the Home Office Active Community Unit.

In the near future we intend to open a community learning resource (more info to follow).

The Meadows is a beautiful place to live. It has been plagued recently with bad press and negative happenings but overall this area is friendly, united and quiet.

The area does need additional resources to offer the community, better facilities for children.

In my view the new Meadows is very isolated as it is mainly houses. I truly believe that the Meadows will come through this transitional period as the strong true united community that is, has and always will be.
