Voices: Turning words into action |
|
|
In
the 1950's hundreds of people from Caribbean islands came to the
UK, with the aim of improving their own and their families lives.

In
Nottingham a community of people from St Kitts (and Nevis, it's
neighbouring island) gathered in the Meadows, and lots of them are
still here today.
We hear from Woody, Eldra and Wilfred and their family, Ethlyn and
Sybil; who tell their stories of the momentous move they made in
the 1950's and 1960's, how their lives changed, and how they're
still a very close community today.
You'll hear about...
- A journey that lasted for 17 days by ship and train.
- The changes they had to cope with, including the very cold
weather and different foods.
- What the St Kitts community is like in the Meadows and what
it means to them.
- A visit to the local social club and church.
- And what really means 'home' today.
