17th Annual Robin Hood Festival

rescue centre staff feed puffin

the real Robin Hood?
There is a week of merry-making in Sherwood Forest to celebrate the life and times of the boldest outlaw that ever lived - Robin Hood!

The festival runs until Sunday, 5th August.

Our 'festival correspondent' rode down to Sherwood Forest on the opening day.

Take our virtual tour around Sherwood Forest as our guide bumps into various characters from the forest in the search for the real Robin Hood.

There is plenty to do at the festival that will keep both the young and old entertained.

At the Sherwood Forest visitors centre there are various entertainers delighting the crowd as they peruse the medieval stalls - see coins being made, goblets being moulded or eat some hog from the spit.

At the open air theatre children are invited to take to the stage and act out the tales of Robin Hood. A ten year old Robin escapes the executioners axe and saves a maiden from being forced into wedlock.

See if you can pick out the famous outlaw in our Search for Robin Hood picture gallery.

On to the Major Oak, impressive despite the restoration work.

Here you can watch reinactments of the battles between good and evil, see how the foresters used to live or try your hand at archery.

All in all there is much to keep a family entertained for the whole day.

My only advice is to remember your green tights. If not you might stand out from the crowd.
