Meet the Immigrants

This four-part series explores the lives of people who have recently migrated to the United Kingdom. Documenting the real experiences of migrants from Eastern Europe, asylum seekers from the Gambia and non-EU citizens from the Philippines, Meet the Immigrants, reflects the challenges these people face in the UK.

Staying On

Staying On meets a new generation of West Africans who have travelled abroad but now seek to make their lives back in their home land. The careers of a carpenter, rap singer, tailor and computer expert are explored. For them, Africa equals opportunity while dangerous to reach and recession-bound Europe is losing appeal.

The Forgotten Refugees

´óÏó´«Ã½ Correspondent, Amanda Burrell, visits seven camps in south east Nepal which house more than 100,000 people - the largest concentration of refugees in the world. Expelled from Bhutan almost twenty years ago, the Nepal Government refuses to grant them citizenship. Unable to work, they depend on humanitarian aid for food. The international community is now taking notice of their plight and many are now being offered a home in the West. Amanda Burrell reports on the difficult decision they face – trading the dream of one day returning to their old homes in Bhutan for a chance to start a new life as free citizens but – in many cases – separated from family and friends.

The World Debate

In association with the ´óÏó´«Ã½ World Service Trust, this special World Debate from Bangladesh focuses on population and asks ‘Are There Too Many People in the World?’ Moderated by ´óÏó´«Ã½ World News Today presenter Zeinab Badawi, the high-profile panel attempt to answer a number of questions including: is rising global population sustainable? Can technological advances and economic growth provide for all? Might migration help population imbalances around the globe? Should population numbers be controlled, and if so, how? and Should we worry about population shrinking?
