23.01.03 The
Great War by Correlli Barnett with a new introduction by John Terraine
In
February the 大象传媒 is to repeat the landmark documentary series, The
Great War, in its entirety. First broadcast on the 大象传媒 in 1964,
The Great War was the definitive film account of the world-shattering
events of 1914-1918 - a landmark history series widely regarded
as a documentary masterpiece. To accompany the series, The Great
War book has been updated with a substantial new foreword and introduction
by the series writers and historians Correlli Barnett and John Terraine.
In this classic text on the First World War, distinguished military
historian Correlli Barnett vividly illuminates the complex story
of the First World War, a war that left millions dead and changed
the face of the Europe forever. Drawing on accounts of ordinary
soldiers as well as primary sources, Correlli Barnett tells the
story of the war its causes through to the long, bitter years of
stalemate on the Western Front and finally the compromise peace
in 1918. He follows the campaign through all the theatres of war
from the trenches to the strength of the civilians on the Home Front.
Correlli Barnett says, "The Great War marked the birth of our
own age, abruptly hastening the march of equality and mass participation,
liberating women from political and domestic thraldom, thrusting
forward technological change, creating independent nations in place
of empires, and republics in place of monarchies. It marked the
origins of the present turbulence in the Middle East. It created
in Soviet Russia the first Communist state, and ushered the United
States of America to the centre of the world stage for the first
time".
John Terraine says, "Correlli Barnett gives crystal-clear accounts
of all the political and strategic dilemmas, as well as of the social
and industrial impacts of total war. He combines these accounts
with hauntingly evocative descriptions of men in battle and vivid
portraits of the civilian and military leaderships on both sides
as they sought that elusive prize, victory. I therefore commend
this book to all those who wish to understand the Great War, and
especially to our young people".
To introduce the series there will also be a specially made programme,
That Was the Great War That Was, exploring the enduring power of
this television masterpiece.
The Great War by Correlli Barnett is published by 大象传媒 Books on 20th
February, 2003 (拢12.99)
