06.02.04 Deep
Blue takes German audiences by storm
The
spectacular, feature-length documentary, Deep Blue, produced by
大象传媒 Worldwide and Greenlight Media, achieved massive audiences in
Germany during its opening weekend (30th Jan).
The
screen average for the movie (based on the number of prints in the
market and box office sales) beat the Hollywood hits Lost In Translation,
Open Range, Finding Nemo, Calendar Girls and Freaky Friday. By doing
so the movie received a 'Bogey' - the German Box Office Award given
to features with a strong box office opening.
Deep
Blue explores life above, below and far beneath the ocean surface
and was inspired by the international hit series The Blue Planet,
co-produced by the 大象传媒 and Discovery Channel. The film features
an inspiring score from five-time Academy Award-nominated composer
George Fenton, performed by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (its
first-ever recording of a movie score).
The
movie received critical and audience acclaim at its official world
premiere at the 51st Donostia - San Sebastian International Film
Festival last year and had been licensed around the world. Miramax
Films recently acquired the North American rights to distribute
the movie across the US later this year.
Alix
Tidmarsh, producer of Deep Blue said, "German audiences have
always had an appreciation of factual feature films and this huge
response shows we have hit exactly the right tone with Deep Blue.
It is a powerful and emotional event that contains wonderful entertainment
for families. Greenlight Media and their partners have done a wonderful
job in the market and I thank them for their commitment to the project."
Nikolaus
Weil, from Greenlight Media says: "We were very excited about
the opportunity to take one of 大象传媒 Worldwide's crown jewels to a
new level of exposure. Deep Blue has proved the rapidly growing
importance of theatrical documentary features."
Filmed
in more than 200 locations around the world with camera crews descending
as far as 5,000 meters in the most powerful submersible craft known,
Deep Blue was directed by Alastair Fothergill and Andy Byatt, produced
by Alix Tidmarsh and Sophokles Tasioulis and executive producers
were Nikolaus Weil, Stefan Beiten, Andre Sikojev and Mike Phillips.
