Varied veggie dishes now more popular than meat, finds bbcgoodfood.com

Vegetarian main dishes are now more popular than meat ones, according to new evidence from bbcgoodfood.com. At the start of Vegetarian Week, the country's most popular recipe website has revealed that its vegetarian main course collection has now overtaken meat dishes as its most visited, with people trying increasingly sophisticated recipes.

is the leading food recipe website in the country, with over two million unique users, so the findings are a good indication of current food trends in the UK. There are a host of exotic dishes in the highest-rated vegetarian section including spiced carrot and lentil soup, crispy Greek-style pie, one-pot mushroom and potato curry and roasted butternut squash with goat's cheese.

According to Andrea McGinniss, editor of bbcgoodfood.com: "A growing number of people are eating less meat, especially midweek, and their tastes are quite adventurous. Our website shows an increasingly sophisticated and diverse range of food options, far from the veggie stereotype of boring salads or pasta and sauce. The vegetarian recipe section [] is the second most popular on the site, after chicken, proving the growing appetite for meat-free dishes."
