Mel Gibson sets the record straight on his height and talks about what women want on Parkinson

Mel Gibson
In a one-hour special of Parkinson (大象传媒 ONE, Saturday 2 March, 10.20pm) movie star and Hollywood heartthrob Mel Gibson reveals to Michael Parkinson what it聮s like being one of the world聮s biggest superstars. In a frank and open interview, he discusses his past drinking problems, the key to maintaining a successful marriage and scotches the rumours about being short.

When Michael asks the actor about his career, Mel says: 聯What happens to the time? All my children are taller than I am now聟 not hard!聰 He then says to Michael: 聯I聮d like to clear up a rumour. We聮re about the same size - stand up.聰 After demonstrating they are the same height - at 5 feet, 11 inches - Mel then jokes to the audience: 聯Now either [Michael聮s] a runt like me or they聮re lying about all of us!聰 He continues, pointing to his shoes: 聯And there are no lifts!聰

Mel talks to Michael Parkinson Michael then asks Mel about his marriage, asking him if he knows what women want? Mel answers: 聯After 22 years of marriage, I got about two things [I聮ve learned about what women want] that I know now - I聮m so thick! One is, flowers work and the other is, let her help!聰

On a more serious note, Mel reveals the moment he realised he had a drinking problem - when he was on the set of Mad Max 3: Beyond The Thunderdome with his co-star Tina Turner. He says: 聯[Tina], she saw it first hand. She stayed with a man who was horrible to her, and she聮d seen it. She saw me and handed me a photograph of myself one day, and she聮d written on it with an eyebrow pencil or something, she said, 聭Don聮t F this up聮 on the picture. And I thought, 聭what did she mean?聮 But it wasn聮t too long after that that I figured out what she meant."

On next week聮s Parkinson are Dame Judi Dench, Kevin Spacey, Rory Bremner and music from The Lighthouse Family.

The Executive Producer of Parkinson is Bea Ballard.
