Fergie to host new show as part of revamped Friday nights on Radio 1

Radio 1 today (Friday 15 March 2002) announces a new line up for Friday nights with world renowned DJ Fergie hosting his own brand new show as part of the revised schedule.

From 7 June, Pete Tong聮s Essential selection will be followed by the Radio 1 Rap Show hosted by Tim Westwood. After Westwood聮s show, Fergie will take over the airwaves with two hours of the finest pumping dance music for fans nationwide. The new schedule will be completed by Fabio and Grooverider bringing listeners two hours of the hottest drum and bass around.

The new schedule comes as Danny Rampling leaves Radio 1 to pursue his international commitments including a new summer residency in Italy. Danny said: "I want to travel so I can fulfil my international requests, which I have sometimes had to say no to during the last eight years whilst on Radio 1. I have enjoyed my time on the station, but it is time to concentrate on the world."

Andy Parfitt, Controller, Radio 1 said: "Danny is a real dance legend. He has made an enormous contribution to Radio 1聮s reputation in this arena, we wish him well with his continuing career."

The new Friday night schedule will be:

6.00 to 9.00pm Pete Tong聮s Essential Selection
9.00 to 11.00pm Radio 1 Rap Show
11.00pm to 1.00am Fergie
1.00 to 3.00am Fabio & Grooverider

Talking about his new show Fergie said: "It聮s unbelievable, I didn聮t think that things could have got any better but they have - happy days!"

Executive Producer For Dance, Matt Priest, said: "Fergie is the hottest name in dance music right now. It is a real privilege to have him on Radio 1 as part of the new Friday night line up, Fergie is a real star, as a club DJ he is on fire at the moment and I聮m sure he will make a great broadcaster."

Commenting on his new timeslot Westwood added: "The only way to start your weekend is with Radio 1. Having the Rap Show on Fridays at 9pm after Pete Tong is going be tremendous, it聮s going to blast off real big. It聮s all about hip hop in 2002."

Ian Parkinson, Head Of Specialist, Live & Speech, added: "I am really pleased that Fergie has now come on board on a permanent basis. His show, coupled with the other schedule changes, gives Radio 1 an unbeatable line up for Friday nights. It is fresh, it is packed with world class talent and it is going to be huge."
