Undercover in the cosmetic surgeon's consulting room

The cosmetic surgeon who left footballer's wife Denise Hendry in intensive care after carrying out liposuction is still operating and advising women to undergo inappropriate surgery.

4X4 Reports (大象传媒 ONE, 7.30pm, Monday 8 July 2002) has secretly filmed Gustaf Aniansson at the Broughton Park Private Hospital, near Preston, as he carried out a consultation with an undercover 大象传媒 producer posing as a potential customer.

During the consultation, which was secretly filmed by 4X4 Reports, Mr Aniansson advised that she was an "ideal candidate" for liposuction and claimed that the risk of infection was "very rare."

But, when leading plastic surgeon Professor David Sharpe viewed the footage and examined the 大象传媒 producer himself, he said that she was in fact "entirely inappropriate for liposuction" and that if she had the operation she was "likely to end up worse off."

During the consultation at Broughton Park Gustaf Aniansson did not refer to one former patient Denise Hendry, wife of Bolton Wanderers and former Scotland football captain Colin Hendry.

Mrs Hendry spent five weeks in a coma suffering from severe septicaemia after the operation. 4X4 Reports reveals Mrs Hendry's bowel was pierced six times in the operation.

When directly asked about the potential risks of infection by the undercover 大象传媒 producer, Mr Aniansson clamed that only one of his patients who had undergone liposuction on their abdomen had ever suffered an infection which was "settled with antibiotics."

But 4X4 Reports reveals that another of Mr Aniansson's patients suffered a severe wound infection following a liposuction procedure.

Charlotte Harrison, who is now scarred so much she cannot bear to show her stomach, told the programme: "At my worst point, I really thought I was dying, I was so poorly."

Gustaf Aniansson denied he was incompetent and reckless and said:
"My prime concern is the welfare of the patient... I never hesitate to decline specific treatments even when pressurised."

"An audit of all my cases since April 2000 shows less than 1% have resulted in any form of complication."

Linda Hanson (who runs Broughton Park) said: "We can only be guided by the National Care Standards Commission, whom we
welcome to inspect our hospital.

"
Our complaint rate is recognised as one of the lowest in the industry. We have only ever had three serious infections and only ever admitted one patient into intensive care."

John Stapleton fronts this investigation into Broughton Park Private Hospital 14 years after exposing another rogue cosmetic surgeon on Watchdog.

The surgeon, David Herbert, was known as the flying doctor because of the speed with which he carried out operations.

John Stapleton questions why potential patients are not warned about surgeons and clinics even when they are being investigated by their regulatory bodies.
