TV DRAMA

Grease Monkeys begins filming in Birmingham for 大象传媒 Choice

Filming has begun on Grease Monkeys, a uniquely dark comedy series produced exclusively for 大象传媒 Choice.

Grease Monkeys is a surreal collection of stories about a dysfunctional Asian family, all of whom work in the family business, Grand Trunk Garage.

Filming in Birmingham for 10 weeks, Grease Monkeys is written by Harwant Bains (Wild West, Two Oranges and a Mango) and is based on his successful Radio 4 series of the same name.

The series stars Archie Panjabi (Bend it Like Beckham, East is East), Ahsen Bhatti (NCS Manhunt, Cardiac Arrest), Marc Zuber (Shirley Valentine), Indira Joshi (Kumars at No. 42), Jake Wood (Lenny Blue) and Nicky Ladanowski (Paradise Heights).

GTM is owned by patriach Mo (Mark Zuber), who spends his time worrying about his beautiful daughter Rita (Archi Panjabi), an ace mechanic who is obsessed with cars and the garage and has no interest in boys, fashion or make-up, let alone finding a nice Asian boy to settle down with.

His son Dave (Ahsen Bhatti) is a sexually irrepressible, irresponsible, minor criminal. He runs the sales side of the business - mostly into the ground.

Mo also has to contend with the ghost of his dead wife Jasbir (Indira Joshi) and a talking dog.

Dave's reluctant and unwitting partner in small time crookdom is best mate Happy (Jake Wood) - idiot savant and genius car breaker.

He's married to Mand (Nicky Ladanowski), professional lap dancer and mother to their baby Edwin.

She wants Happy to straighten out his act and stay away from Dave. She longs for a better life and he wants to be a real husband and a proper Dad but he just can't help himself getting involved with Dave and his wacky schemes.

Executive Producer Alexei De Keyser says: "Focused on a Mancunian Asian family, viewers won't have seen anything like this before.

"It's no-holds-barred, go-for-it TV. If a scene is imaginable in a writer's mind we'll shoot it."

Stuart Murphy, Controller of 大象传媒 Choice, says: "Grease Monkeys is an ambitious, distinctive comedy drama, which we hope will have real impact on and throughout our target audience.

"It's witty, smart and very brave. Breaking new talent in front and behind the lens, Grease Monkeys feels spot on for 大象传媒 Choice."
