Jean van de Velde joins the 大象传媒 Sport Open Championship team
and 大象传媒 Radio Five Live extends hours of coverage
Jean
Van de Velde - the man who will always be remembered as the one
who nearly won the Open Championship - joins 大象传媒 Sport's television
team as a guest pundit.
Van
de Velde qualified for the Tour in 1988 and has been an ever-present
since then. He made his Ryder Cup debut in 1999 and took up Membership
of the US PGA Tour in 2000.
Now
Van de Velde is something of a cult figure in Europe and the United
States following his exploits at Carnoustie where he led the 1999
Championship by three shots playing the 72nd hole only to take a
triple bogey and then lose a play-off to Paul Lawrie.
Bringing
a unqiue perspective to the event, Van de Velde will be sharing
his thoughts on the Championship with viewers on 大象传媒 ONE and 大象传媒
TWO.
He
is joined by Sam Torrance and Mark James.
European
Ryder Cup Team captain Torrance played in the Ryder Cup contest
eight times and has a special affinity with The De Vere Belfry (the
venue for the postponed matches in 2002) having holed the winning
putt there in 1985 when Europe ended a 28 year drought in the event.
During
28 years on Tour, he had walked an estimated 14,000 miles, taken
just under 150,000 shots and earned approximately 拢1,600 per
round - or 拢22 a stroke! His grand total of games now stands
at 660 as he embarks on his 31th season on the Tour.
Former
Ryder Cup captain Mark James completes the television group.
James
has 18 European Tour victories to his name over a professional career
spanning a quarter of a century. He has finished in the top five
in the Open Championship on four occasions and has made seven Ryder
Cup appearances.
In
between their rounds at Muirfield, Paul Eales and Jamie Spence will
be joining the 大象传媒 Radio Five Live commentary team.
Nephew
of former English amateur champion, Terry Shingler, and two time
European tour winner, Paul Eales was one of the last players to
qualify for the 2002 Open after an impressive two rounds earlier
this week. This will be Eales' seventh Open Championship.
Former
England captain Jamie Spence worked briefly in a City of London
bank after leaving school at 16 and also worked as a barman and
labourer before turning professional at 22.
He
waited eight years to claim his second European Tour title following
his 1992 success in the Canon European Masters when he won the 2000
Moroccan Open M茅ditel by four shots in Marrakech.
This
year, he has already had a successful week in Scotland, finishing
seven under in the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond.
Now
teeing off for the Open, Eales and Spence will both be bringing
a players perspective to the nation, hot-foot from the 18th hole!
In
order to capture all the action as Tiger Woods tees off with Justin
Rose at 9.01am on Thursday 18 July, Radio Five Live is extending
its hours of coverage starting from Breakfast until Sport on Five.
