Cracking
Crime - 18 September 2002
Following
the success of YOUR NHS, this autumn 大象传媒 ONE is taking the lead
on a special day of programming on another hot topic: Cracking
Crime will aim to dispel the myths and give a true picture of
crime across the UK.
It
will also look at what you can do to prevent being a victim and
ask what can be done to reduce crime rates.
大象传媒
ONE will devote much of its daytime and all primetime to Cracking
Crime programming, including news programmes, live and interactive
shows and discussions, advice, personal stories, and films from
across the UK, with 大象传媒 local radio and 大象传媒i also playing a big
role.
Nick
Ross and Fiona Bruce will front the evening programming and
will invite viewers to play an active role in the event by putting
their views and questions to the people who can make a difference.
A special
大象传媒 website
has already gone live.
It
includes: listings of all Cracking Crime programmes; a search engine
to find crime statistics in your area; and crime prevention tips
and discussion forums.
Viewers
will also be invited to vote during You the Judge and contribute
opinions on all the programmes, via the website and digital satellite
and cable interactive tv.
Don聮t have Nightmares
Nick
Ross and Fiona Bruce will be at the Galleries of Justice in Nottingham,
with Peter Snow in Manchester, presenting the evening's first live
programme which aims to give the true picture of crime across the
UK and to dispel the myths about who really is most at risk.
The
show will examine the different types of crime affecting different
regions, as well as highlighting current crime trends through the
experiences of law enforcers, victims and criminals.
Don't
have Nightmares will also showcase several top crime-crackers -
successful crime-prevention initiatives from towns and cities across
Britain.
To
Catch A Thief
Who
better qualified to give advice on home security than those who
used to breach it for a living?
Two
reformed criminals - one now a Methodist pastor, the other a successful
businessman - show how easy it is for burglars to break in to our
homes and, along with police representatives, give practical tips
on how to stop them.
In
a family home specially rigged with CCTV, the duo first illustrate
how a thief would target weak spots in security, after which they
set about improving the home聮s defences.
Valuable
advice from a pair used to dealing in valuables.
The
Philadelphia Experiment
The
Philadelphia Experiment tests the pioneering and effective method
of crime reduction that is sweeping America to see if it would work
in Britain.
First
introduced in New York, "Compstat" relies on timely intelligence,
rapid deployment, effective tactics, and relentless follow-up. But
can it work in Britain?
Police
officers from Thames Valley will see Compstat in operation in Philadelphia
and decide what can be learned and if the system could be used in
Oxford.
Philadelphia
police will be on hand in Oxford to see if Compstat could be the
key to crime reduction here.
You
the Judge
As
the UK's jails strain to cope with growing numbers of inmates, You
the Judge invites you to step into the judge's shoes and decide
on a sentence that you feel is appropriate to the crime.
With
dramatic reconstructions and contributions from the victims and
perpetrators of crime, the audience will be ask to cast votes (by
phone, online, or their interactive TV's red button) for the sentence
they feel the crime deserves.
You
the Judge promises to be an interactive debate of moral dilemmas.
Further
programmes
After
the Ten O'clock news, Cracking Crime will continue with a lively
discussion In the Hotseat, addressing all the issues raised
throughout the day, inviting the public - including viewers - to
put their concerns to those who have the power to help reduce the
UK's crime rates.
and
on Thursday 19 September:
Anatomy
of a Crime
Minutes
after a post office in South Yorkshire was held up by armed robbers,
大象传媒 cameras began to record the remarkable process of criminal investigation
and prosecution.
With
unprecedented access, negotiated over more than three years, the
result is a fascinating pursuit and insight into cracking crime
in the UK.
It
emerges that while attempting to raid the post office, the robbers,
almost comically gave up when postal staff told them to leave.
As
they ran, one pulled off his balaclava to reveal a distinctive ponytail.
From then on, its only a matter of time before they're caught.
But
before their arrest, the robbers turn up in Milton Keynes to carry
out another but much more brutal attack.
On
top of the police, forensic and prosecution access, Anatomy of a
Crime filmed one of the robbers in prison as he underwent psychological
assessment before beginning a life sentence.
Notes
to Editors
The
drama Out
of Control will also transmit as part of this season on
Sunday (15 September).
