Proms 2002 breaks box office records
Box
office income exceeds 拢3.6 million for first time
Total Proms attendances reach 340,000
More TV Proms than ever + 300 hours of Proms broadcasts across 大象传媒
The
大象传媒 Proms, which finishes this weekend, has again broken records
in 2002 by raising more than 拢3.6 million for the first time
through ticket sales for the 73 main Royal Albert Hall concerts.
Although
prices rose slightly for the first time in more than a decade, 大象传媒
Proms still reached tickets sales of around 260,000.
More
than half the Royal Albert Hall concerts sold out, matching last
year's extraordinary figures, and the average seats sold for the
main evening concerts was 86%.
For
the second year running all of the Monday lunchtime Chamber Proms
sold out completely.
The
大象传媒 Proms season was more ambitious than ever in 2002.
It
included 73 main concerts, eight Chamber Proms, four Composer Portraits,
four Poetry Proms, the annual Proms Lecture, more than 30 Pre-Prom
talks, and five 大象传媒 Proms in the Park events around the UK including
the first Prom in the Park in Belfast and the brand-new 大象传媒 Blue
Planet Prom in the Park.
Overall
there were more than 340,000 attendances at 大象传媒 Proms events between
19 July and 15 September 2002.
Millions
had free access to Proms broadcasts on 大象传媒 radio, television and
online, and there were seven more televised Proms than in any previous
year.
大象传媒
Radio 3 broadcast every concert live on air and online, while 大象传媒
ONE and TWO televised 10 between them, attracting an estimated 12
million viewers.
The
free-to-air digital channel 大象传媒 FOUR televised 14 concerts in the
opening weeks of the season, all of which were also video-webcast
online.
2002
saw the first year of online booking through the highly acclaimed
大象传媒 Proms website.
A
remarkable 45% of ticket applications during the priority booking
period were made using the new facilities and the number of visitors
to the site rose by 25%.
The
大象传媒 Proms continues to attract attention from around the world.
大象传媒
World Service gives countless millions around the world the opportunity
to hear the Proms and each of the 60 Proms taken by the European
Broadcasting Union is heard by an average of three million people
across Europe.
USA's
National Public Radio broadcast 12 Proms attracting a further two
million listeners and this year will broadcast the Last Night of
the Proms live, coast-to-coast, following its spontaneous decision
last year to broadcast the more sombre Last Night which followed
the September 11th attacks.
While
individual concerts are often televised abroad, the Last Night goes
to more than 25 other countries as far afield as Canada and Australia,
including live broadcasts in Japan, Norway, Denmark and Germany.
Nicholas
Kenyon, Director of the 大象传媒 Proms, said: "It is fantastic that
the 大象传媒 Proms continue to grow, and continues to be valued by a
huge audience, live and on air.
"Our
sense of adventure in the repertory has been as great as ever, and
through digital and online broadcasts we are exploring new ways
of communicating with our audiences.
"The
pessimists are wrong: classical music is flourishing, especially
at the Proms."
