Two new 大象传媒 Governors appointed


Ranjit Sondhi's term as Governor for the English Regions extended

Downing Street today announced that Dame Ruth Deech and Angela Sarkis have been appointed Governors of the 大象传媒.


They will take up their posts on 23 October 2002 for a four-year term.


Downing Street also announced that Ranjit Sondhi's term as Governor for the English Regions is being extended by four years until October 2006.


In a statement 大象传媒 Chairman, Gavyn Davies, said: "I greatly welcome the appointment of Ruth Deech and Angela Sarkis and look forward to working with them.


"They bring a broad range of experience which should make them both valuable members of the Board of Governors.


"I am also pleased that the term of office of Ranjit Sondhi has been extended. He is a great champion of the English Regions and brings real insight to the Board's deliberations."

Dame Ruth Deech and Angela Sarkis replace Heather Rabbatts and Tony Young, who left the Board in December 2001 and July 2002 respectively.


Ranjit Sondhi was appointed Governor for the English Regions in August 1998 for a four-year term of office. Since the end of July, when his first term ended, he has been Governor-designate pending confirmation by Downing Street of his extended term of office.


Dame Ruth Deech


Ruth Deech was born in London in 1943. She was educated at Christ's Hospital and St Anne's College, Oxford, where she graduated with a First in Law in 1965, followed by an MA from Brandeis University in the USA; she was called to the Bar (Inner Temple) in 1967.


She was a Fellow and Tutor in Law at St Anne's College from 1970 until she was elected Principal of the College in 1991.


She has published in the fields of Family Law and Property Law. She was Chairman of the UK Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) from 1994-2002.


The HFEA was established by legislation in 1990 to consider ethical questions arising from advances in medicine, and to regulate research and treatment of infertility.


Ruth Deech is an Honorary Bencher of the Inner Temple and a Rhodes Trustee, a Governor of University College School, an Honorary Fellow of the Society of Advanced Legal Studies and a Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University.


She was created DBE in the Queen's Jubilee Birthday Honours.


Angela Sarkis


Angela Sarkis is an independent consultant with wide experience of voluntary organisations, the public sector, faith communities and charitable trusts.


She was Chief Executive of the Church Urban Fund from 1996 to January 2002.


She also has a background in the Probation Service and the Family Service Units.


She is experienced in working with disadvantaged communities and individuals.


She has developed several programmes across Britain, which support vulnerable families, crime prevention, educational opportunities and employment. She was a trustee of 大象传媒 Children in Need from 1996 to July 2002.


Angela has contributed to a number of government Committees and Advisory Groups and is currently a non-executive director on the Correctional Services Board at the Home Office, a member of the Interim House Of Lords' Appointments Commission and Adviser to the Department for Education and Skills on teacher workload management.


Angela chairs the NCVO Diversity Project, is a member of the Active Community Unit Advisory Panel at the Home Office and Vice-President of the African Caribbean Evangelical Alliance.
