HARDtalk:
Dr Mamphela Ramphele
On
大象传媒 News 24's HARDtalk tonight (Tuesday 19 November), Carrie Gracie
interviews Dr Mamphela Ramphele, Managing Director of The World
Bank Group.
Dr
Ramphele was born in a remote rural region in South Africa's Northern
Province.
She
grew up under the apartheid regime's dictum that "blacks should
not be shown green pastures where they would never be allowed to
graze".
But
against these odds she persevered to become a medical doctor and
- together with her partner Steve Biko - a leading member of the
Black Consciousness Movement.
Two
years ago she took up a post with the World Bank - responsible for
managing the institution's human development activities in the areas
of education, health, nutrition and social protection.
But
progress in these areas has been slow and criticism of the bank's
track record on issues such as debt relief has been fierce.
Carrie
Gracie questions Dr Ramphele about the progress and asks her if
she has sold out.
