Mastermind
Celebrity Special, 大象传媒 TWO, Monday 30 December 2002, 8.30pm
To
celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first ever Mastermind final,
Magnus Magnusson returns with the most famous black chair in tv
history to put four of the UK's cleverest - and bravest - celebrities
in the spotlight for a one-off special.
The
luminaries experiencing the lonely walk to the black chair and,
potentially, an even lonelier walk back to their seat if things
do not go to plan, are:
Dr
Adam Hart-Davis, writer, photographer and broadcaster - specialist
subject Heroes of Science and Invention before 1900;
Janet
Street-Porter, journalist and broadcaster - specialist subject
British Teapots 1735-1970;
Vic
Reeves, comic actor - specialist subject The Golden Age of Piracy
1680-1720;
Jonathan
Meades, writer and tv performer - specialist subject English
Architecture 1850-2002.
The
show will mirror the tensions of the original.
All
the contestants are expected to come armed with detailed knowledge
of their specialist subject and will also face a testing session
of general knowledge.
Naturally,
should any of them not have the correct answers to hand, they have
the option of saying "pass"...
Magnus
Magnusson says: "It's great to be back asking the questions
after a five year break.
"I
can't wait to see how our celebrity guests fare under the spotlight
sitting in the infamous black chair.
"Hopefully
they'll be used to dealing with the pressure but if it does start
getting to them, like I've always said, 'it's only a bloody game'."
Notes
to Editors
Mastermind
is a national institution. At its height, the programme pulled in
over 22 million viewers for the 大象传媒.
The
intimidating quiz show was first recorded at Liverpool University
in 1972.
The
black leather chair struck fear into the contestants and even the
theme tune - Approaching Menace by Neil Richardson - is designed
to intimidate.
The
catchphrase "I've started so I'll finish" is in the Bloomsbury
Dictionary of Common Phrases.
Other
memorable phrases often delivered by Magnus Magnusson included "You
passed on three"; "Stop the Watch" and "In the
spotlight tonight..."
Some
of the most unusual specialist subjects to be featured on Mastermind
have included Theropod Dinosaurs; Sweet Peas; Iron Graveslabs of
England; and the Life and Times of Author and Broadcaster Magnus
Magnusson...!
