Feather Boy announced as Blue Peter Book of the Year 2002

The debut novel of writer Nicky Singer has scooped the Blue Peter Book of the Year award, to be broadcast on 大象传媒 ONE on Sunday 15 December.

Feather Boy is the tale of Robert, a boy who is the class victim, the guy who's never picked for the team.

So no-one is more surprised than Robert himself when a strange old lady sends him on a quest to solve the mystery of a derelict house.

There is a ghoulish legend attached to the house. But to find out what this past has to do with his own future, Robert must learn what it really means to fly.

Feather Boy triumphed in the category The Book I Couldn't Put Down, as well as winning the overall award for the Book of the Year.

Nicky was overjoyed at her victory. She said: "I'm thrilled, first to win an award judged by the people who count - the children - and second, to get to go to the Blue Peter studio and wear all four of my Blue Peter badges!"

On receiving her award at the ceremony at Television Centre in London, Nicky also thanked the young judges and her son Roland, who first suggested that she start writing books for children.

The adult judging panel had a busy summer poring over hundreds of children's paperbacks published in the last year to come up with a shortlist of fifteen.

Writer and broadcaster Ian Hislop chaired the judging and was joined by author Malorie Blackman, writer and illustrator Shoo Rayner, literature consultant Liz Attenborough and Editor of Blue Peter, Steve Hocking.

As well as the adults, there was a panel of nine young judges who won their places on the jury by writing a book review and sending it in to Blue Peter. The search for junior judges brought in over 20,000 entries.

They were also responsible for deciding the winners in the following categories: The Best Book to Read Aloud, The Book I Couldn't Put Down and The Best Information Book.

In addition, two other open categories gave children the chance to vote for their favourite story books and favourite knowledge books in over 4000 libraries across the UK during the summer.

As well as unveiling all the winners, the Blue Peter Book Awards also reveals the celebrity fave reads of Prime Minister Tony Blair, Will Young, Nicki Chapman, Ronan Keating and even Basil Brush!
