Winners of ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 3 Awards for World Music


The winners of the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 3 Awards for World Music 2003 are:


Gotan Project (France): Newcomer


Ellika & Solo (Sweden/Senegal): Boundary Crossing


Samira Said (Egypt): Middle East


Orchestra Baobab (Senegal): Africa


Mariza (Portugal): Europe


Los de Abajo (Mexico): Americas


Ensemble Kaboul + Ustad Mahwash (Afghanistan): Asia/Pacific


Orchestra Baobab (Senegal) – 'Specialist in All Styles' (World Circuit): Critics Award for Album of the Year


Many of the participants will be taking part in the Poll Winners Concert at Ocean on Monday 24 March.


The nominations for the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 3 Audience Award are Te Vaka (New Zealand); Oi Va Voi (UK); Terra Folk (Slovenia); and Seize the Day (UK). The winner of this award will be announced on the night at Ocean.


The awards will be co-hosted by Rita Ray and Verity Sharp and awards presented by a number of guests, still to be announced.


Last years awards were presented by, among others, Johnny Depp (to Romanian gypsy band, Taraf de Haidouks) and Damon Albarn (to Cuban bassist, Orlando Cachaíto López).


Highlights of the awards can be heard on Radio 3 on Thursday 27 March and seen on ´óÏó´«Ã½ FOUR on Friday 28 March.


A CD, Awards for World Music, featuring a track from each nominee, is released on Monday 10 March on the Manteca label.

The Poll Winners Concert takes place on Monday 24 March 2003 at Ocean, London.
