ABOUT THE ´óÏó´«Ã½

An inventive new season as ´óÏó´«Ã½ ONE springs into summer

Press pack available below

From an exploration of the creative brilliance of leading cultural figures to a brand new competition to find Britain's most exciting budding inventors, ´óÏó´«Ã½ ONE sets out to stimulate viewers this spring/summer with a £270 million season of programmes.

Lorraine Heggessey, Controller ´óÏó´«Ã½ ONE said: "´óÏó´«Ã½ ONE has a role to play in expanding viewers' knowledge and in offering new ideas and thoughts. Now that we've got a stronger foundation to the channel almost every day of the week, what we're trying to do is bring greater breadth and depth into every genre – including science and the arts. This is a continuation of what we've been doing over the last eighteen months, and viewers are now seeing the fruit of this strategy on-air."

´óÏó´«Ã½ ONE has a successful track record in launching a range of science programmes and this season brings two new series.

Nigel Marven and a friend
For his first major ´óÏó´«Ã½ ONE landmark, intrepid zoologist Nigel Marven, embarks on an epic quest to understand the extraordinary origins and power of the Human Senses.

Nigel goes in search of the biological roots of our senses on a journey that takes him around the globe, to uncover the evolutionary reasons why particular sights, sounds, smells and tastes have such a strong effect on us.

Innovation Nation calls all budding scientists to get inventing. ´óÏó´«Ã½ ONE launches this year-long initiative to celebrate invention, with a look at ideas that have changed the world or made everyday living easier.

Would-be inventors are challenged to get thinking and to submit some life-changing ideas of their own. Through the year the entries will be whittled down to a short list which make it off the paper and into working prototypes.

The public will then vote to find the winner and one team will get the chance of a lifetime to have their idea marketed and put on sale.

Young inventors too can be part of the innovation nation by competing for awards of their own through C´óÏó´«Ã½.

´óÏó´«Ã½ ONE puts a fresh face on the arts this summer as Alan Yentob introduces Imagine, a new strand that takes a regular look at the people and topics making waves in the arts.

Documentaries will go behind the scenes with stories on a range of subjects from contemporary music and modern dance, to classical ballet and sculpture, casting new light on the visual arts, theatre, photography and fashion.

Lorraine Heggessey said: "We have put a huge amount of time into thinking how we can best serve the different audiences that come to ´óÏó´«Ã½ ONE for arts and culture, with different demands from this specialist subject. We're keen to open the window to new audiences for arts, but we also want to serve the aficionados."

Titles for this first season of Imagine include:

• The Saatchi phenomenon - As Charles Saatchi opens his gallery of contemporary art in what used to be London's County Hall, this film goes behind the scenes at the gallery as the huge and iconic works of art by Damien Hirst and others are installed, and contains unique scenes of Charles Saatchi himself.

Cuban ballet star, Carlos Acosta
• Carlos Acosta: the reluctant ballet dancer - Young Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta is profiled for the first time. Already a hugely successful dancer, Carlos has a season at the Royal Ballet this year dancing with Darcy Bussell. Carlos has choreographed his first show, Toco Roro and the film shows preparations for the show at Sadler's Wells in London and its premiere in Havana.

• Stella's story - An intimate and exclusive look at the life of Stella McCartney and a glimpse of what it was like to grow up in the McCartney household. The film goes behind the scenes at her recent Paris fashion show and watches her prepare for the London opening of her new shop.

• John Mortimer: owning up at 80 - An affectionate study of John Mortimer, lawyer, writer and commentator, as he celebrates his 80th birthday. A barrister who became a household name through his creation, Rumpole of the Bailey. The film hears his advice about life, what he's learned of it and from it.

The Birth of Frankenstein continues ´óÏó´«Ã½ ONE's occasional series on 19th century British women writers. Professor Robert Winston offers a fresh look at Mary Shelley, one of the most enduring novelists of her generation and one of the most remarkable women of the age.

Using dramatic reconstructions and starring Victoria Hamilton and Patrick Malahide, In Search of the Brontës shatters the myths that have surrounded the celebrated literary sisters Charlotte, Emily and Anne.

Other season highlights:

David Morrissey and John Simm star in State of Play
• A major new conspiracy thriller from award winning writer Paul Abbott, State of Play is a gripping story of deception, collusion and abuse of power set against the backdrop of Whitehall and Fleet Street.

He is the investigators' judge, he sets their line of enquiry but it's the terrifying Killer's Game that decides who stays on the team.

• Paul O'Grady stars as Ray, bingo caller and manager in Eyes Down, a new comedy by Angela Clarke following the lives, loves, hopes and disappointments of staff and punters at a Liverpool bingo hall.
