An
inventive new season as ´óÏó´«Ã½ ONE springs into summer
Press
pack available below
From
an exploration of the creative brilliance of leading cultural figures
to a brand new competition to find Britain's most exciting budding
inventors, ´óÏó´«Ã½ ONE sets out to stimulate viewers this spring/summer
with a £270 million season of programmes.
Lorraine Heggessey,
Controller ´óÏó´«Ã½ ONE said: "´óÏó´«Ã½ ONE has a role to play in expanding
viewers' knowledge and in offering new ideas and thoughts. Now that
we've got a stronger foundation to the channel almost every day
of the week, what we're trying to do is bring greater breadth and
depth into every genre – including science and the arts. This
is a continuation of what we've been doing over the last eighteen
months, and viewers are now seeing the fruit of this strategy on-air."
´óÏó´«Ã½
ONE has a successful track record in launching a range of science
programmes and this season brings two new series.
For his first major ´óÏó´«Ã½ ONE landmark, intrepid zoologist Nigel Marven,
embarks on an epic quest to understand the extraordinary origins
and power of the Human Senses.
Nigel
goes in search of the biological roots of our senses on a journey
that takes him around the globe, to uncover the evolutionary reasons
why particular sights, sounds, smells and tastes have such a strong
effect on us.
Innovation
Nation calls all budding scientists to get inventing. ´óÏó´«Ã½
ONE launches this year-long initiative to celebrate invention, with
a look at ideas that have changed the world or made everyday living
easier.
Would-be
inventors are challenged to get thinking and to submit some life-changing
ideas of their own. Through the year the entries will be whittled
down to a short list which make it off the paper and into working
prototypes.
The
public will then vote to find the winner and one team will get the
chance of a lifetime to have their idea marketed and put on sale.
Young
inventors too can be part of the innovation nation by competing
for awards of their own through C´óÏó´«Ã½.
´óÏó´«Ã½
ONE puts a fresh face on the arts this summer as Alan Yentob introduces
Imagine, a new strand that takes a regular look
at the people and topics making waves in the arts.
Documentaries
will go behind the scenes with stories on a range of subjects from
contemporary music and modern dance, to classical ballet and sculpture,
casting new light on the visual arts, theatre, photography and fashion.
Lorraine
Heggessey said: "We have put a huge amount of time into thinking
how we can best serve the different audiences that come to ´óÏó´«Ã½ ONE
for arts and culture, with different demands from this specialist
subject. We're keen to open the window to new audiences for arts,
but we also want to serve the aficionados."
Titles
for this first season of Imagine include:
•
The Saatchi phenomenon - As Charles Saatchi opens
his gallery of contemporary art in what used to be London's County
Hall, this film goes behind the scenes at the gallery as the huge
and iconic works of art by Damien Hirst and others are installed,
and contains unique scenes of Charles Saatchi himself.
• Carlos Acosta: the reluctant ballet dancer
- Young Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta is profiled for the first
time. Already a hugely successful dancer, Carlos has a season at
the Royal Ballet this year dancing with Darcy Bussell. Carlos has
choreographed his first show, Toco Roro and the film shows preparations
for the show at Sadler's Wells in London and its premiere in Havana.
• Stella's story - An intimate and exclusive

life, what he's learned of it and from it.
