How
tickled I am - Ken Dodd is voted the Greatest Merseysider
Thousands
of people from all over the country have voted to find the Greatest
Merseysider and topping the bill is comic genius Ken Dodd.
The
unique poll run jointly by 大象传媒 Radio Merseyside and the Liverpool
Echo was set up two months ago to find out who deserves the title
Greatest Merseysider.
Although
faced with some outstanding competition from other contenders Ken
Dodd has never moved from the top spot.
Votes
were logged on the 大象传媒 Liverpool website with regular updates on
the campaign on 大象传媒 Radio Merseyside, and in the Liverpool Echo.
Ken
Dodd is delighted and thrilled to be awarded the accolade, especially
as the votes have been made by the public.
"I
have received several awards during my career, but without doubt
this is the greatest honour ever bestowed upon me because it comes
from the people who live here, the real Merseysiders who love the
place as much as I do," he said.
In
recognition of the award, actor Ricky Tomlinson presented Ken with
a framed scroll in a live programme on 大象传媒 Radio Merseyside on Friday
11 April.
Ricky
himself came 19th in the final top 20 Greatest Merseysiders.
Mick
Ord, the Managing Editor of 大象传媒 Radio Merseyside, believes the poll
has shown the diverse wealth of talent born on Merseyside.
"The
top twenty are a fabulous mix of people who have excelled in many
different walks of life both in the past as well as the present,"
he said.
"Ken
Dodd proved to be the overwhelming favourite right from the start
and I am very happy he has been voted the Greatest Merseysider."
Ken
Dodd started his professional career as a comic in 1954 and is now
approaching his 50th anniversary in the business.
During
this time he has had his own television series and a string of hit
records, including a number one hit with Tears, as well as serious
acting roles to his credit.
Ken
has travelled the world many times but he says there's only one
place called home: "Liverpool
is where I was born and where I have lived all my life. It is where
I truly belong."
