Full details of the 109th season of the 大象传媒 Proms have been announced by Nicholas Kenyon, Controller, 大象传媒 Proms, Live Events and TV Classical Music.

The season runs from 18 July to 13 September 2003, with more concerts and special events than ever, including for the first time Proms in the Park in all four UK nations.

Greek Myths is the big theme of the season.

These stories of love, war, gods, gorgons and elemental acts
of passion have resonated across the centuries, inspiring some of the greatest works of art in all its forms.

The 大象传媒 Proms presents many of the finest myth-inspired works including some on a huge scale.

At the heart of the season are performances of major dramatic masterpieces: Berlioz's The Trojans under Sir Colin
Davis, Strauss's Elektra under Donald Runnicles, Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and Tippett's King Priam.

There are myth-inspired works by Stravinsky, Britten, Mendelssohn and Nielsen, and by living composers from Birtwistle to Woolrich.

The Proms bicentenary celebrations for Berlioz also feature the lyrical oratorio The Childhood of Christ conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the thrilling early opera Benvenuto Cellini under Sir Roger Norrington.

The 50th anniversary of Prokofiev's death is marked by a range of music including symphonies, concertos (including the Cello Concerto in its rarely heard original form), and the opera War and Peace, which comes to the Proms in a semi-staged performance of English National Opera's acclaimed production.

The First Night presents the Russian composer's film score for Ivan the Terrible with the 大象传媒 Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leonard Slatkin.

Sir David Attenborough narrates Peter and the Wolf.

Other anniversaries celebrated at the Proms includes those of Arnold Bax, Lennox Berkeley, Gy枚rgy Ligeti and Thea Musgrave.

For Corelli's 350th birthday a huge Baroque string orchestra has been specially assembled.

The Proms continues to be unrivalled as a patron of new and recent music.

Major recent works from around the world by Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Elliott Carter, Heiner Goebbels, HK Gruber, Oliver
Knussen and Judith Weir and a new score from Joseph Phibbs for the Last Night are some of the highlights.

There is the first opportunity in Europe to hear John Adams's Pulitzer Prize-winning response to 9/11, On the Transmigration of Souls.

The 大象传媒 Proms continues to attract the world's leading orchestras and conductors.

The new partnership of Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker comes to the Proms for the first time.

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has an afternoon concert of popular classics conducted by the unique Bobby McFerrin (who also sings!).

Then there is the long-awaited return of the Israel Philharmonic conducted by Zubin Mehta and the UK debut of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, Daniel Barenboim's unique orchestra comprised of young Arab and Israeli musicians.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra gives two concerts in its farewell tour with Mariss Jansons.

The 大象传媒 Symphony Orchestra is, as ever, at the heart of the 大象传媒 Proms season with 12 concerts.

Following its appearance at last summer's Prom at the Palace the Orchestra once again plays in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, who make only their second visit to the Proms in a programme celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Coronation.

Among leading singers star soprano Angela Gheorghiu makes her Royal Albert Hall Proms debut as soloist in the Last Night, while Barbara Frittoli makes hers in Strauss's Four Last Songs.

Thrilling American mezzo Lorraine Hunt Lieberson sings Jocasta in Stravinsky's Oedipus rex as well as Britten's cantata Phaedra.

Olga Borodina sings Berlioz's La mort de Cl茅op芒tre and Gabriele Schnaut the title-role in Elektra.

There is Anne Sofie von Otter in a Late Night Prom of Handel and Bach and Dame Felicity Lott performing Poulenc's one-woman tour de force to a Cocteau text, La voix humaine.

The Trojans marks the Proms debut of Canadian tenor Ben Heppner.

Among the instrumentalists this year are pianists Leif Ove Andsnes, H茅l猫ne Grimaud and Stephen Kovacevich, and cellists Heinrich Schiff, Steven Isserlis and Yo-Yo Ma.

Viktoria Mullova, Vadim Repin, Gil Shaham, Christian Tetzlaff, Tasmin Little (introducing Ligeti's Concerto to the Proms), Pinchas
Zukerman (in Oliver Knussen's acclaimed new Concerto) and Leila Josefowicz on the Last Night create a strong season for violinists.

Violinist Janine Jansen, viola player Lawrence Power and singers Jonathan Lemalu and Alice Coote are among 大象传媒 Radio 3's New Generation Artists appearing at the Proms.

Bringing concerts to the widest possible audience has been central to the Proms ever since the 大象传媒 took over their management 76 years ago.

Once again the Proms go digital with a fortnight of broadcasts on
大象传媒 FOUR, and the website will take online booking.

This year the Proms season will be more interactive than ever.

Digital satellite viewers will be able to choose among the four separate Proms in the Park concerts, while Freeview viewers will be able to access the London Hyde Park concert.

There's also a big expansion in the 大象传媒 Proms Online menu - all the news and information on the season including full sets of programme notes for all 73 Royal Albert Hall concerts and handy quick guides and behind-the-scenes features.

As well as booking tickets online, viewers can post their views and questions on a message board and can write their own reviews.

On-screen programme notes will be provided to digital viewers and several Proms will again be available as Audio on Demand for up to seven days after broadcast.

Audience involvement doesn't stop with increased access.

This year for the first time people are asked to vote for what they want to hear on a Proms programme.

In The Nation's Favourite Prom singers Rosemary Joshua and John Mark Ainsley have boldly volunteered to perform arias and duets chosen by readers of the 大象传媒 Proms Guide, Radio Times and users of the Proms website.

including the new Saturday morning Celebrity Choice.

There is now a huge range of extra events alongside the Royal Albert Hall concerts.

In a pre-season innovation, Proms out & about, leading composer and conductor John Adams helps the Proms reach new audiences when he and the 大象传媒 Symphony Orchestra work with children aged seven to 12 and their parents at the Brixton Academy in London.

A Post-Prom discussion is introduced in addition to Pre-Prom talks.

take place at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

The British Museum and the Proms have joined forces to

The National Gallery will present talks on Greek-myth inspired paintings.

And in the season's final weekend Proms in the Park comes to Hyde Park, Swansea, Glasgow and Belfast, reaching all four nations of the United Kingdom for the first time with stars including Bryn Terfel in Hyde Park.

The 大象传媒 Proms continue to offer outstanding value for money: there is no increase in ticket prices from last year.

Buying tickets for the concerts is easier than ever with online booking once again complementing telephone and postal booking procedures through the 大象传媒 Proms Guide.

Full details of the 大象传媒 Proms 2003 season can be found online and in the 大象传媒 Proms Guide, which is published on Thursday 1 May.

It gives concert-goers their first chance to apply for tickets for the season before telephone booking opens on Monday 16 June, as well as being an invaluable companion to the season.

Priced at 拢5, it is available from all good bookshops.

Nicholas Kenyon said: "Thanks to the collaboration of colleagues across the 大象传媒 and artists from around the world, we are now providing an extraordinary range of events of the highest quality
