Help keep your kids safe online with the 大象传媒

大象传媒i has produced a Chatguide for parents and guardians, teens and kids on how to chat safely on the internet.

Available via or in a leaflet available from your local library or local 大象传媒 building foyer, 大象传媒i Chatguide aims to give guidance on how to keep you and your family safe while enjoying the web.

Tips and suggestions are given in three sections for parents, teenagers and kids.

Meera Syal, who is fronting the campaign for the 大象传媒, says: "Computers, mobiles, games consoles and interactive TV are cool 'toys' for kids - but they invite the outside world into your home.

"Chatguide explains how you as parents, can help keep your kids safe."

In the UK, more than five million children use the internet.

Once online, they can enjoy thousands of educational and entertainment websites.

They can also join a vast community of other kids linked by a worldwide network of computers.

For all the wonderful opportunities going online offers, there are those who may use the internet in ways you would consider offensive, or for purposes that are actually illegal.

If children enter chatrooms, they must be aware of the dangers.

To keep them safe, your advice and supervision as a parent must cover use of the family computer.

Just as you decide which television programmes are best for your child, you should check out the websites and chatrooms that they wish to visit.

Children should know that although they have been chatting to online "friends" for a long time, these people are really still strangers.

For parents

With Chatguide you can find out a range of information from 'What is Chat?' to 'What you should do as a parent' and more information on the internet in general.

You can also share your thoughts and advice with other parents on the 大象传媒i family safety discussion board.

For teens

For teens, 大象传媒i Chatguide provides information on how to practice safe chat.

Not all Chats and Message Boards are full of 'lurking paedophiles' but it's important to consider the potential dangers.

The Rules of the Road - What you can do as a parent:

* Talk to your kids about the internet and their online pals. Teach your children to tell you about their friendships with other children and adults (online and offline). Get to know their friends.

* Learn about the internet and mobile phone texting

* Keep the PC in a family room

* Realise that you and your kids are in control, it's easy to leave a chatroom or quit a website

* Teach your kids how they can simply leave a chatroom if they feel - in any way - uncomfortable

* Understand that people behave the same way online as offline, so your child may encounter bullying online or even via their mobile, just like in 'real life'

* Make sure your kids NEVER give out their personal details

* Tell your kids their online chum is still a stranger, they may not be who they appear to be, sometimes people use nicknames and a few people may say they are a different age than they actually are in real life.

Meera Syal's top tips are:

* Make sure your member name isn't the same as your real name

* Alert a Moderator if you feel threatened online

* Be wary - people may not be who they say they are

* Don't give out personal info. Would you give a complete stranger your name, address and telephone number? No. Then why do it in a Chat Room/Message Board?

* Never give away your friends' details online - addresses, email addresses, mobile numbers or anything that could identify them offline

* You should never meet up with someone you have only met in a Chat Room no matter how long you've known them or how tempting it seems, because this is really, really risky. But if you are determined to meet up with a friend then NEVER go it alone, always take a mate or parent with you. ALWAYS tell an adult where you are going, and what time you'll be back

* If you do start chatting regularly with someone, let a parent or friend know

* Stick to public Chat Rooms

* Never say anything in a Chat Room that you wouldn't say in public

* Never go off into a private discussion area alone
