Radio
Wales and Radio Cymru on Freeview
From
today, 大象传媒 Radio Wales and 大象传媒 Radio Cymru will be available on
Freeview, free digital terrestrial TV (DTT) offering.
Listeners
with Freeview will now be able to switch on their televisions and
tune in to their favourite radio programmes.
Radio
Wales will be available on channel 89 and Radio Cymru will be available
on channel 90.
Radio
Wales and Radio Cymru will bring the total number of radio channels
available on Freeview in Wales to 21, augmenting the platform's
25 TV channels.
Julie
Barton, Radio
Wales Editor, says: "Having
radio available on Freeview is an exciting development, and there's
a real trend towards listening to radio through television.
"Freeview
gives people the chance to hear Radio Wales in quality digital sound."
Radio
Cymru Editor Aled Glynne Davies also welcomed this new development.
"New
technology has enabled Radio Cymru to reach new audiences. We are
already broadcasting on digital satellite across the UK, on the
internet across the world and now on Freeview across Wales,"
he says.
Radio
Wales and Radio Cymru are already available on both Digital Satellite
and cable.
According
to RAJAR - the official audience research body for the radio industry
- 18.6 per cent of adults in the UK say they listen to the radio
via their television set.
That's
nearly nine million people - up from 6.7 million in less than a
year.
Much
of the increase has been attributed to Freeview which gives access
to digital TV and radio without having to pay a subscription.
The
number of homes in the UK with Freeview has almost doubled in the
last nine months.
More
than 1.5 million Freeview boxes were being used at the start of
July.
Freeview
allows people to watch extra services, such as 大象传媒 2W - digital
TV for Wales - and 大象传媒 FOUR plus news and music channels by making
a one-off outlay of around 拢99 for the box, without a monthly
fee.
