Trainers
Adele
has plans to see her 'businessman' boyfriend, Dennis. But her dad,
Roly, isn't happy about this, and neither is mum, Natalie: they
both think Dennis is a terrible influence on her.
Adele
persuades them to invite him round, to see that really Dennis is
a fine, upstanding pillar of the community. But
things don't quite go to plan.
Meanwhile
Natalie has bought Aiden some new trainers in return for all the
work he's been doing around the house.
The
trouble is they're not the right brand and a defiant Aiden decides
to deface them.
Roly
asserts his authority, insisting Aiden wears the mutilated trainers
to school as punishment.
Aiden
has no choice and as a result he is shamed in front of his friends.
When
this eventually leads to Aiden getting into trouble with the police,
there's only one man who can help: Adele's boyfriend Dennis.
Will
Roly stand by his principles, or will he have to listen to Natalie
and learn to compromise?
2.
School's Out
"Say
hello to yesterday!" - Natalie can't wait for the school reunion
disco, but her enthusiasm is dampened when Roly refuses to go.
He
won't even give a reason why he's being so stubborn and not even
the thought of Nat in school uniform will sway him.
Surely
the re-appearance of the gorgeously fit Jimmy Rudolph (Nat's old
school crush) will make him budge. Or maybe Roly just doesn't love
her anymore.
Grandpa's
big mouth gets him in trouble. After one cheeky quip too many at
the dining table, Roly banishes him to his room.
Stubborn
Grandpa won't stand for this and leaves, finding shelter at a men's
hostel.
This
freedom is certainly more grim than Grandpa imagined. There aren't
even any skirts for him to chase …
Meanwhile,
Adele reluctantly job hunts on Natalie's insistence. Work? The thought
is almost too much for Adele to bear.
Now,
what can she do that will require minimum effort for maximum return?
3.
Uncle Sonny
The
saying, 'you can't choose your family' has never rung more true
for the Crouches than now. An impromptu visit from Uncle Sonny from
Jamaica is more than they can bear.
Sonny's
not exactly the easiest of houseguests. Roly wants him out but what
can Natalie do? After all, he's family.
Roly
fails to get through to Sonny, so he and Natalie decide they need
someone on Sonny's wavelength to have a word - enter Grandpa Langley.
Grandpa's
little chat with Sonny doesn't exactly go to plan. Not only does
Sonny take over Grandpa's room, he takes away his woman (Eileen
from the bowling club) too!
Grandpa's
a broken man with little to look forward to besides large print
Agatha Christie and his favourite toffees.
When
Sonny brings a goat into the house, it's the final straw - Natalie
makes a desperate call to Grandma Sylvia.
Meanwhile,
Grandma Sylvia is away in Devon with her irritating cousin Janet.
Grandma doesn't like cream teas, or Janet for that matter, so the
phone call from Natalie with news of Uncle Sonny is the perfect
excuse for her to go home and sort out her wayward brother.
Little
does Sonny know what's about to hit him …
4.
Heat
Roly
is not happy. It seems Grandma feels the cold more than anyone else
in the house and is responsible for the huge heating bill he has
to pay for.
Surely
Grandpa Langley will come to Grandma's defence?
Grandma
doesn't want to be a burden, so sneaks out that night and checks
herself into a retirement home.
The
family visit Grandma - it's a chance for them all to get away from
'Scrooge' Crouch and enjoy above freezing temperatures for a change.
Grandma
seems happy in her new home - how could she not be when her days
are brightened with singing seventies classics like Play That Funky
Music White Boy around the piano with fellow residents - but is
this just a facade?
This
all puts a strain on Roly and Nat's relationship. Nat wants her
mum back, but Roly won't compromise. Is this the end of the road
for Roly and Nat?
Still,
at least Grandpa's happy - now he can turn the basement into his
very own bachelor pad. First he has to convince Roly to install
a cocktail bar and a wide screen TV.
5.
Join The Dots
Natalie
has a problem. After 18 years of marriage to Roly and two children,
Aiden and Adele, she's not got enough excitement in her life.
So
when devastatingly handsome Reverend Garstang arrives at Poundkickers,
the discount store where she works, and invites her for a service
at his new church, Natalie is faced with a serious dilemma. Should
she go or should she stay home and sort out her marriage?
Buoyed
up by friend Lindy, Natalie decides to take her dilemma to the Reverend
and gets a bit more than a good listening to.
Roly
knows there's a problem with Natalie but what is he supposed to
do?
Roly's
boss Bailey suggests he disposes of his family but that's not quite
the advice Roly was looking for.
Roly's
mate Ed is happy to offer advice but all Ed's ideas point one way
- to get inside someone else's pants. In the end, there's only one
man who can help: Roly himself.
Meanwhile, Grandpa has to face up to a dark truth from his past
. . .
6.
Test
Natalie
is determined to get some class into her life, so when her attractive
new friend Reverend Garstang invites her to a classical music concert,
she's very tempted.
Even
though her husband Roly isn't happy and her friend Lindy tells her
the date will end in tears, Natalie resolves to go through with
it.
It's
a last chance to taste the sophistication that she feels is rightfully
hers. Shame then, that the date goes so disastrously wrong for all
concerned.
When
Roly discovers that Reverend Garstang is taking Natalie out, he
knows he has to act to save his marriage. The question is how?
Roly
decides to confront Garstang but when he comes face to face with
him, Roly meets a new problem: Garstang is so handsome that even
Roly decides that if he were Natalie he'd be very tempted to sleep
with him!
Eventually,
Roly's jealousy forces him to take matters into his own hands to
win Natalie over. But will it work?
Meanwhile,
Grandpa is jealous when Grandma makes a special new friend at a
funeral. For one thing it means he's lost Grandma as a dominoes
partner.
