Russian billionaire tells 大象传媒 World Service of three assassination
attempts against him
Russian
billionaire Boris Berezovsky has claimed the Russian authorities
tried to have him killed on three separate occasions while he has
been living in London.
According
to Berezovsky, his assassin was planning to use sophisticated chemicals
to kill him.
Speaking
on the 大象传媒 World Service's World Business Report programme
last night (8.30pm, 11 September) he said Scotland Yard had told
him of two planned attempts on his life.
On
a third occasion he had been warned by a Russian source who he knew
had connections to the security service, the FSB, the successor
to the KGB.
Boris
Berezovsky said: "I have a lot of evidence, real evidence,
that people from the intelligence service tried several times to
organise an attack on me here in London...
"I
know for sure as a fact that there were three times.
"I
was even informed by officers from Scotland
Yard that it is so, that really they have got clear evidence that
there is an attack [planned] against me from Russia."
Berezovsky
said he was given the first warning in August 2002 and that British
police had given him police protection in addition to his own guards.
It
has been widely reported that Berezovsky has been granted political
asylum by the Home Office.
The
Russian Government has requested his extradition on fraud charges.
Berezovsky's
lawers say that the charges are politically motivated because of
his opposition to President Putin.
Berezovsky
said that in the third case his bodyguards noticed a man was trying
to follow him.
Berezovsky
claimed the man confirmed that he had been given orders by Russian
officials to kill him.
A
spokesman for the Russian Embassy in London said the embassy had
no comment on the story.
