WOMAD - Music By The River, 大象传媒 FOUR, Friday 26 September, 9.00-11.00pm

大象传媒 FOUR presents an observational film which captures the unique atmosphere, diversity and music of this year's WOMAD festival.

WOMAD, or World Of Music, Arts and Dance, is Britain's premier annual world music festival .

Its aim is to bring together and celebrate music, arts and dance from all over the world.

Whilst the music is international, the audience comes mostly from all over Britain; together they have a good time come rain or shine.

WOMAD - Music By The River, captures the atmosphere and great music at this year's festival.

On an unusually damp weekend in July, thousands gathered under the colourful flags at Rivermead in Reading.

The festival is seen through the eyes of some of those who attended:

an enthusiastic family from Wiltshire;

a troupe of South African shepherds who make their own instruments and had previously never been out of their homeland;

Nitin Sawhney, who pops in to perform as part of his international touring schedule;

and Andy Kershaw and Charlie Gillett whilst they broadcast live on national radio.

Through their eyes we take a journey through this unique festival which offers an insight into a huge diversity of cultures and music.

Artists performing include Bembeya Jazz, Oumou Sangare, Jimmy Cliff, 1 Giant Leap, Manu Dibango & Ray Lema, Nitin Swahney and Sevara Nazarkhan.

Established in Britain in 1982, WOMAD has now become a truly global festival, hosting events in Australia, North America, South Africa, Japan and several European countries every year.

Peter Gabriel, the inspiration for the original WOMAD festival, says: "The festivals have allowed many different audiences to gain insight into cultures other than their own through the enjoyment of music."
