Mastermind
Grand Final 2003
Only
four contestants remain in the fight for the title of Mastermind
Champion 2003 (´óÏó´«Ã½ TWO, Monday 3 November at 8.00pm).
The
contenders make the lonely walk across the darkened studio to take
their seat in the infamous black chair.
John
Humphrys hosts the grand final from The Lowry in Salford
Quays.
Each
contestant comes armed with detailed knowledge of his specialist
subject, but must also face a gruelling two minutes of general knowledge
questions.
In
the spotlight for the final are:
Darren
Martin, IT Consultant
Specialist subject: Life and music of Jim Morrison
Andy
Page, Civil Servant
Specialist subject: International Golf 1970 – 2003
Ian
Pickering, Accounts Assistant
Specialist subject: Life and career of Charles Rennie Macintosh
Geoffrey
Thomas, Retired Lecturer
Specialist subject: Life and works of Marc Chagall
Quiz-master
John Humphrys says he doesn't envy them: "I don't know about
the contestants, but the questions terrified me! It's a constant
source of amazement to me that anyone would want to subject themselves
to it."
The
winner takes home a glass bowl, but the ultimate prize is the title
of Mastermind 2003.
Writer
and broadcaster, Dr Adam Hart-Davis, presents the trophy. As a contestant
on Celebrity Mastermind in 2002, Hart-Davis has first hand experience
of how the Mastermind interrogation can leave you speechless:
"When
you come across the black floor, the lights go down and you even
forget your name. It's as though a sort of shield comes down in
front of your brain! It's terrifying!"

Mastermind
was first recorded at Liverpool University in 1972. The black leather
chair struck fear into the contestants and even the theme tune -
Approaching Menace by Neil Richardson - is designed to intimidate.
The series ran until 1997 and was presented by Magnus Magnusson.
Mastermind
returned to our screens this summer with John Humphrys as the host.
The
quiz was devised by Bill Wright, the programme's first producer,
who died in 1980. A former RAF gunner, he drew on his wartime experience
as a PoW in Germany of answering three questions - name, rank and
number.
Contestants
always sit in the chair and go through the ritual - name, occupation
and specialist subject.
