New team of editors to take over at Today

A new team of editors is set to take over the Today programme next week - from Monday 29 December to Friday 2 January.

The five, invited by Today Editor Kevin Marsh, will choose some of the issues to be tackled on the programme.

The guest editors are author Monica Ali (Monday); Lord Tebbit (Tuesday); Radiohead's Thom Yorke (Wednesday); radio critic Gillian Reynolds (Thursday); and Professor Stephen Hawking (Friday).

Professor Hawking said: "Today is the most influential programme on the radio so I welcomed the opportunity to raise issues I consider important."

Monica Ali said: "Why did I agree to do this? I like a challenge. And I don't think this kind of opportunity is going to come around very often."

Editor Kevin Marsh said: "Judging from the letters and emails I get, everybody thinks they can edit Today. Well ... here's the chance for five of our better known listeners to prove it."

The guest editors will be responsible for between a quarter and a third of each programme's output - though there will be the normal day and night editors on hand to make sure that their material is newsworthy and stays within the law, the bounds of taste and decency and the 大象传媒 Producers' Guidelines.

The guest editors also have the support of Today producers and reporters to turn their ideas into radio journalism - and most will be in the studio during the transmission of their own programme.
