Inside Out - Facelift Holidays

Inside Out, Monday 9 February 2004, 大象传媒 ONE East Midlands, 7.30-8.00pm

Anne Davies presents the popular features and current affairs show.

Facelift Holidays

East Midlands Airport in Nottingham is the gateway to many holiday destinations. A chance to get away from the pressures of work and come back rejuvenated.

But increasing numbers of people are jetting off and coming back looking younger too.

Inside Out goes to Prague and Madrid to examine the bargain facelift holiday and cheap cosmetic surgery.

There are numerous adverts which read like glossy holiday brochures but cheap isn't always the best.

There aren't the same regulations in place and in some cases patients don't even get to meet the surgeon who is going to operate on them before the operation.

Inside Out spent four months with a woman from Leicester who has been hoping to transform her appearance; and the cheapest way to do this is visit a clinic abroad.

Eileen Alott is an ordinary woman who lives on an ordinary estate in Leicester.

She flew hundreds of miles to the glamorous capital of Spain for an operation which she hoped would turn back time.

Eileen says: "When I look in the mirror I see the face of a much older woman. I've had a hard life and you can see it in my face."

So what made 53-year-old Eileen leave her family and friends back in the UK to endure what some might say is a risky and expensive procedure, just for price of vanity?

Eileen says: "The moment I realised something had to be done was when I went to buy a train ticket and the cashier asked me if I had my senior citizens' railcard."

Life has been tough in recent years for Eileen. Nine years ago one of her daughters was tragically killed in car crash. She's found it hard to come to terms with and the signs of stress, she feels, can be seen in her face.

But moving on doesn't come cheap and, with a price tag of around 拢12,000, she's prepared to go into debt for many years to pay it off. She's also used her redundancy money.

Eileen opted for a total facelift to remove all her excess skin; it's a major operation which will last around six hours.

See Eileen's story on Inside Out, and find out if the surgery was a success.
